UH Sports Circle of Honor
John Nakamura was a fixture on the UH softball coaching staff for 25 seasons. A pitcher and outfielder for the UH baseball team in the 1950s, he was an assistant for three softball head coaches including Bob Coolen from 1992-2009. A well-respected coach in the local community, he joined Alika Thompson’s inaugural staff in 1987 and spent two seasons on Rayla Allison’s staff. He helped coach 18 all-conference performers on nine NCAA Tournament teams and three conference championship squads. A teacher in the Department of Education system for 28 years, he coached high school baseball for several schools and led Kailua High to the 1969 state championship.
