UH Sports Circle of Honor
For over four decades, Cindy Luis covered UH teams for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and Honolulu Star-Advertiser (1981-2023). She was the beat writer for both men’s and women’s volleyball, covering five NCAA championship teams (WVB – 1982 , ’83, ’87 and MVB – 2021, ’22), and also the beat writer for men's and women's basketball. She was the first female in the Star-Bulletin’s sports department and, in 1999, was named sports editor, becoming the first woman to head a sports department in the state of Hawai‘i. She twice was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as national print journalist of the year and earned a USA Volleyball media recognition award. She also served as assistant sports editor and columnist for the newspapers.
