UH Sports Circle of Honor
Dr. Shunzo Sakamaki was a respected educator and athletics supporter during the early- to mid-1900s. Besides serving as president of the Hawai‘i chapter of the American Association of University Professors, Sakamaki was a financial backer for UH basketball and football, serving as a tutor and academic advisor to UH athletes on road trips. One of the early UH professors to teach Asian studies, Sakamaki was dean of the UH Summer Session in the late 1940s and ‘50s, developing the program into one of the nation’s largest and most renowned.
