The University of Hawai‘i Athletic Training Staff is dedicated to servicing the health and wellbeing of nearly 500 student-athletes in 21 intercollegiate programs.
The athletic training and medical staffs conduct general physicals and orthopedic examinations on each student-athlete to ensure they meet the minimum requirements necessary to compete in Division I athletics. They are also responsible for the care, prevention, evaluation and rehabilitation of athletically related injuries and illnesses for each of the student-athletes.
Head Athletic Trainer Lyn Nakagawa, is assisted by full-time assistants, graduate student certified athletic trainers, athletic training students, and volunteers, who also assist in the daily operation of the five athletic training facilities in the athletics complex.
Dr. Jonathan Sladky (Head Team Physician) coordinates medical consultants from the community who volunteer their time to the UH Athletics program. They provide medical coverage at events hosted by University of Hawai‘i Athletics.
The newly renovated Dr. Alvin and Monica Saake Athletic Training Room features treatment, rehabilitation and taping areas, walk-in hot and cold therapy pools, and offices for the team physician and staff.
There are also four other athletic training rooms on the UH lower campus. They are located in the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, Les Murakami Stadium, Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and Stan Sheriff Center.
The athletic training staff works closely with the Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences (KRS) program in providing a clinical setting for athletic training students that meets the criteria for NATA certification.
The full-time staff and graduate assistants are certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA).
