Box Score HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team rallied to score three runs on two outs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Cal Poly, 3-2 on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hawai'i scored two runs on a hit by
Nicole Lopez and an error on the Cal Poly leftfielder to tie the game. Later in the inning,
Heather Morales came through with the walkoff single that drove in
Sarah Muzik with the bases loaded for the comeback win. UH's
Brittany Hitchcock earned the complete game win to improve to 11-14, while Cal Poly's Sierra Hyland suffered the loss dropping her record to 12-6.
The Mustangs scored a run in the first and the third innings for a 2-0 lead through the first six-and-a-half innings. Both times, Stephanie Heyward started things by getting on base with a single in the first and an error in the third. In both situations, Amanda Sandoval followed Heyward with a sacrifice bunt to push her into scoring position for Hyland, who drove in both runs with singles.
Hawai'i was held off the scoreboard until the very last inning. Cal Poly's Hyland got a strike out to begin the inning, but
Tayana Mata started the epic rally with an opposite-field single to rightfield. She moved to second on a groundout to second. Then, with two outs,
Jennifer Iseri reached on a fielding error on the shortstop to put runners at first and second. Muzik followed with a single to left to load the bases. UH then tied the game when
Nicole Lopez lifted a single to leftfield which allowed Mata to score easily from third. On the play, the leftfielder mishandled the ball which allowed Iseri to sprint home to tie the game at 2-2. With runners at second and third, Cal Poly decided to walk
Keiki Carlos to load the bases. Morales, however, then came through in the clutch, driving in Muzik with the first pitch, walkoff single to left for the 3-2 win. Morales tallied three of UH's nine hits in the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Hitchcock (11-14) earned the complete game win, allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks and five strike outs in seven innings of work.
Hyland fell to 12-6 overall, giving up three runs on nine hits with a walk and 13 strikeouts (which was a season-high for UH as a team) in 6.2 innings.
The two teams will square off in a Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m. It will be the final home games for five Rainbow Wahine seniors—
Keiki Carlos,
Tayana Mata,
Sarah McAndrew,
Dori Ann Sugai, and
Kiani Wong.
