HONOLULU-The University of Hawai'i softball team (18-21, 2-4 Big West) split Saturday's doubleheader on Military Appreciation Day at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The game was scoreless through the first four-and-a-half innings. Hawai'i posted the first run on the board. Rachael Turner led the inning off with a double to the leftfield corner. Pinch runner Dori Ann Sugai advanced to third on a grounder to short that resulted in a fielding error to allow Aina Cabrales to reach first safely, leaving runners at the corners. Ulu Matagiese then lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to allow Sugai to score from third to take a 1-0 lead.

The Matadors however, answered right back in the top of the sixth inning as Taylor Glover drove a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to see-saw in front of the 'Bows, 2-1.

CSUN added two runs in the seventh to go up, 4-1 on an RBI-double by Maylynn Mitchell and later, Mitchell came around to score on a hit and an error.

Kanani Aina Cabrales took the loss, dropping her record to 7-8 overall and 0-1 in the Big West. She gave up four runs on seven hits with a walk.

CSUN's Daphne Pofek earned her second complete-game win of the series. She gave up one run on six hits with a strike out.

UH pitcher Brittany Hitchcock fired a complete-game shutout to earn the win. She improved to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in conference. She scattered six hits with no walks and three strike outs. It is the 14th time this season that Hitchcock has not given up a walk in an appearance in the circle.

CSUN's Taylor Troost suffered the loss in four innings of work. She gave up three runs on seven hits with no walks and three strike outs. Katie Chenault tossed the final two innings, allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and four strike outs.

The Rainbow Wahine got on the scoreboard first, posting two runs in the bottom of the third. Breanna Ojala led the inning off with a single to short. After a pop-out on a bunt attempt, Jennifer Iseri laced a double to the right-centerfield gap to allow Ojala to race around the bases to score from first. Sarah Muzik kept things going by beating out a bunt-single to third to put runners at the corners with Iseri on third. After a pop out to second, Keiki Carlos legged out an infield single to short to drive in Iseri from third for UH's second run.

Hawai'i added another run in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0. Aina Cabrales and Ojala started the frame with back-to-back hits and Ulu Matagiese was hit by the pitch to load the bases with one out. Aina Cabrales scored on a wild pitch, but the Matadors escaped further damage by getting a flyout to left and a ground out to first to stymie the 'Bows.

In the sixth inning, UH added three more runs to take a 6-0 lead. Ojala led the inning off with her third single of the game. She later scored off a throwing error to second. Then with the bases loaded, Carlos drilled a double over the leftfielder to drive in both Matagiese and Iseri, giving UH a six run lead heading to the final inning.

The win snapped UH's four-game losing streak and was Hitchcock's third shutout of the season.

Prior to the start of Saturday's Military Appreciation Day doubleheader, the Marine Corps Brass Band played for the fans in the stands and later the full Marine Corps Band of the Pacific marched onto the field to play the National Anthem and Hawai'i Pono'i while the University of Hawai'i Air Force ROTC Color Guard presented the colors. Brigadier General Suzanne Vares-Lum threw out the ceremonial first pitch to get the day underway.

The Rainbow Wahine will hit the road for a three-game conference series at UC Riverside beginning with single game on April 15 at 3:00 pm. The two teams will then square off with a doubleheader the following day on April 16 beginning at 1:00 pm
