Kanani Aina Cabrales (5-2) came in relief to earn her third win of the tournament while UH's offense was highlighted by
Nicole Lopez's go-ahead, three-run blast in the fifth inning.
The Wolverines scored first, posting a pair of runs off of four hits in the top of the third inning, including RBI-singles by Brianna Gatlin and Morgan Smith.
Hawai'i cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the frame, getting one run back to trail UVU, 2-1.
Breanna Ojala led the inning off with a double to the left-centerfield gap. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Sarah Muzik and then scored on a line drive, sacrifice fly to straightaway centerfield.
The Rainbow Wahine tied the game at 2-2 in the following inning.
Heather Morales led off the inning with a hit up the middle. After a pop-up to second,
Tayana Mata drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Later with two outs,
Heather Cameron hit a shallow fly to rightfield towards the foul line. The ball popped out of the rightfielder's glove and the ball rolled away from her which allowed Morales to score from second. But, on the play Mata was picked off at third after taking a wide turn at third for the final out of the fourth.
Utah Valley responded by taking a two-run lead in the fifth on a two run double by Brittany Vansway to give UVU a 4-2 lead.
Hawai'i then see-sawed in front in the bottom of the fifth. Ojala reached first on a fielding error on the shortstop. She stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Muzik drew her second walk of the game and then Lopez came through with the blast over the left-centerfield fence. The homer was the freshman's third of the season and eight of her 14 hits thus far are of the extra base variety with three doubles, two triples and three home runs. UH led 5-4 after five innings.
UH added one more run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by
Naomi Monahan which drove in Mata from third after reaching earlier in the inning on a walk.
