Biography

2002 (Senior): Started and played in 49 games...batted .277 with 23 runs and 25 RBI...had nine doubles, one triple, and one homerun.

2001
: Redshirted after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder following the 2000 campaign.

2000 (Junior): Played in 38 games making 36 starts (LF=29, 7=DH)…missed eight games (Jan. 21-Feb. 5) with a left shoulder injury and was hampered throughout the season…batted .280 overall (LH=.457; RH=.196)…hit .231 (21-for-91) in 23 WAC games…had a season-high seven game hitting streak.

1999 (Sophomore): Started all 44 games he played in (LF=27, DH=15, 1B=2)…missed the first seven games of the season awaiting transcripts from Texas Tech…missed all six official games of the Easter Tournament with a bruised left shoulder…led squad with 46 RBI…team’s top hitter with runners in scoring position batting .400 in 80 at-bats…had 24 multiple hit and 12 multiple RBI games…hit UH’s first and his only home run at Texas Christian (Feb. 26)…enjoyed most of his success at home where he batted .389 in 36 games…had two season-high seven game hitting streaks, including the later to end the season…top UH batter in 28 non-WAC games posting a .403 average…batted .331 in 29 WAC games with 31 RBI and 21 runs…was the only position player to be named WAC Player-of-the-Week (Feb. 14)…hit .462 with a double, triple, and four RBI and earned WAC All-Tournament honors along with shortstop Corey Miller…tied a school record with Michael Dartt collecting eight at-bats at Air Force (April 8)…had a season-high four hits and four RBI at Air Force (April 8)…overall, hit .355 (LH=.361; RH=.353)…named team’s co-Most Outstanding First Year Player.

Texas Tech: Played in 11 games off the bench for a Red Raider team that went 44-20…hit .417 overall with a double, homer, five RBI, and two runs…fielded .952 handling 21 total chances and committing only one error.

Prep: A 1997 graduate of Punahou School in Honolulu…coached by Pal Eldredge…earned four letters in baseball…garnered letters also in both football for Dan Morrison and basketball under Dave Eldredge…named 1995 Best of the West Baseball Classic Outstanding Hitter…selected to the 1996 Area Code All-Star Tournament…named all-state and all-Interscholastic League of Honolulu all four years in baseball…won Sophomore Athlete Award…was named to the 1995 and 1996 all-state and all-ILH football teams as a linebacker…won the Dr. Fox Student Excellence Award for academics…involved in several organizations including community service, Punahou Carnival, and the Young Life Club…drafted in the 31st round by the Detroit Tigers after senior season.

Personal: Born in Honolulu…hobbies are swimming and surfing…played the last three summers with the Hawai‘i Island Movers leading the team to the 1997 Alaska League Championship…has an older sister and an older brother…parents are Sylvia and Mike Martines.
