Photo GalleryHONOLULU – Walking amidst a record 2,500 University of Hawai'i at Manoa graduates during Saturday's Spring Commencement Exercises at the Stan Sheriff Center, 88 current and former Rainbow Warrior and Rainbow Wahine student-athletes from 20 programs took their final, and most important step in their journey at Manoa – walking among their classmates as graduates in the 105th Annual Graduating Class.
The graduating group is represented by 39 student-athletes from men's teams, 39 student-athletes from women's teams and 10 student-athletes from coed teams. The largest team represented on Saturday was the football team, with 14 student-athletes earning their undergraduate degrees. The swimming and diving team was the most highly-represented among the women's programs, with eight graduates. The other teams followed with: baseball (12) sailing (9), track and field/cross country (7), women's basketball (5), men's swimming and diving (5), softball (4),
women's tennis (4), men's basketball (3), soccer (3), water polo (3),
men's golf (2), beach volleyball (2), men's volleyball (2), women's volleyball (2), women's golf (1), cheer (1) and men's tennis (1).
Several of the student-athletes who will attain their degrees during the summer session also participated in the Spring Commencement ceremony. Two current student-athletes, both from beach volleyball, received graduate degrees this semester—those student-athletes are
Heather Boyan (M.S., Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science) and
Katie Spieler (M.A., Accounting). Former baseball player
Stephen Ventimilia also earned his graduate degree (M.S., Adapted Physical Activity) after serving at the program's manager this season. Former tennis player Aglae Van den Bergh also earned her J.D. in Law on Saturday.
Two teams are off campus, with softball at Cal Poly and track and field at the Big West Championships, and held their own private ceremonies for their graduates.
Each of the graduating student-athletes received white "H" stoles courtesy of the UH Letterwinners Club and were honored in a pre-graduation reception breakfast along with their families.
