Box Score 2 Photo GalleryHONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (20-25, 4-8 Big West) were swept in Saturday's doubleheader by Cal State Fullerton at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Titans won the first game, 7-1 and completed the series sweep with a 2-0 win in the finale. Fullerton improved to 38-10 overall and remains the lone undefeated team in the Big West at 12-0. Saturday was Power in Pink Day at the ballpark with the team wearing special Under Armour pink jerseys in recognition of breast cancer awareness.
Cal State Fullerton 7, Hawai'i 1Box Score (html) Sammie Vandiver led the game off with an opposite-field triple hit down the leftfield line. She was driven home on an RBI-fielder's choice by Missy Taukeiaho that was hit to second base. The Titans went on to load the bases on a couple of seeing-eye singles. Taukeiaho then scored on a throwing error on the shortstop to home which also allowed Sarah Moore to score as the ball ricocheted around the backstop. Melissa Sechrest later crossed the plate on an RBI-single through the left-side of the infield by Sydney Colenzo for the early 4-0 lead.
The Titans added another run in the top of the second to extend their lead to 5-1. Taukeiaho reached on a single to short and later scored from second on a single to leftfield by Sechrest.
The Rainbow Wahine put two runners on board with no outs in the bottom of the frame with
Dori Ann Sugai and
Alia Monges getting back-to-back singles. Both runners moved into scoring position on an illegal pitch with no outs. They were left stranded as Fullerton got two groundouts and a flyout to center to snuff out the rally.
The Titans scored two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Sechrest came through with an RBI single to right to score Ari Williams and Colenzo lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in pinch runner Brooke Clementson.
Hawai'i's
Keiki Carlos broke up CSF's bid for a shutout when she launched a solo home run over the leftfield fence with two outs in the seventh inning. It marked Carlos' third homer of the season and 25
th of her four-year career.
The Rainbow Wahine had at least one runner on base in every inning except for the third. UH left nine runners on base for the game.
Hawai'i starter
Kanani Aina Cabrales took the loss, dropping her record to 8-9 overall. She gave up seven runs on 11 hits with a walk and a strike out in four innings of work. Reliever Iseri shutout the Titans in the final three innings, allowing just one hit with two walks and a strike out.
CSF's Desiree Ybarra earned the complete game win, giving up one run on seven hits with a walk and six strike outs to improve to 12-5 overall.
Cal State Fullerton 2, Hawai'i 0Box Score (html) The Titans got on the scoreboard first, posting one run in the second on a solo home run by Sarah Moore. Fullerton added another run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Delynn Rippy that drove in Shianne Brannan from second.
That would be all the offense that Titans' starter Sydney Golden would need as she fired a four-hit shutout in a complete game effort. She gave up one walk with two strike outs to lower her ERA to 1.63 on the season. Golden improved to 16-3 overall in her rookie season.
Hawai'i's
Brittany Hitchcock fired her 23
rd complete game of the season. In the loss, she fell to 9-12 overall and 3-5 in conference. She gave up two runs on seven hits with no walks and seven strike outs.
It is just the second time since Hawai'i rejoined the Big West that the 'Bows have been swept at home. The last time that happed was when Cal Poly swept Hawai'i at home in April 2014.
The Rainbow Wahine have three remaining series left in the season—two on the road and one at home. Next week, the 'Bows head to UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series beginning with a single game on April 29 at 3:00 pm, followed by a doubleheader on April 30 at 1:00 pm. Both games are on Pacific Standard Time.
