Box Score (html)HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (11-9, 0-0 Big West) fell to Stanford, 14-6 in six innings on Day 2 of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
Kanani Aina Cabrales (6-4) suffered the loss on Saturday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Cardinal jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first on a pair of two-run home runs by Whitney Burks and Lauren Frost.
Hawai'i got on the scoreboard in the third inning.
Jennifer Iseri got plunked to start the rally and
Heather Cameron followed by drilling a double to the left-centerfield gap to push both runners into scoring position. After an out,
Nicole Lopez got a base hit to shallow left to score Iseri from third. UH went on to load the bases with one out. But Stanford changed pitchers and got the final two outs to end the rally.
The Rainbow Wahine erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to leapfrog ahead of Stanford with a 6-5 lead.
Breanna Ojala led the inning off with a single to left-centerfield. She moved to second on an illegal pitch and advanced to third on a ground out. After a strike out, UH started a rally on two. Cameron began with a single to drive in Ojala.
Keiki Carlos then drilled an infield single to third.
Ulu Matagiese then drove in two runs with a single to left to tie the score at 5-5.
Dori Ann Sugai then entered the game and battled at the plate fouling off four pitches with two strikes before she got a single over the shortstop into left-centerfield to drive in Carlos to take the lead.
But, Stanford answered right back in the fifth to see-saw back in front off a two –run home run by Kayla Bonstrom. Then in the sixth, the Cardinal pulled away, scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 14-6 lead.
The Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament concludes on Sunday, March 6. Coastal Carolina will take on Stanford at 10:00 am followed by Hawai'i vs. CCU at 12:30pm.
