HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (13-14, 0-0 Big West) hosts its fifth and final tournament of the season this week as the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic gets underway on Wednesday, March 16 and runs through Saturday, March 19. The three-team tourney features No. 25 Texas (16-4, 0-0 Big 12), Iowa (6-13, 0-0 Big Ten) and Hawai'i.
The Rainbow Wahine played hard against tough competition this past week in the Outrigger Spring Fling Tournament. Hawai'i went 1-4 in the tourney but were in all of the games, falling to No. 21 Baylor and California by just one run each. On the week, freshman
Nicole Lopez led the 'Bows hitting .353 (6-for-17) with two doubles and an RBI.
Sophomore pitcher
Brittany Hitchcock made her first appearance since Feb. 28 on March 11, throwing four innings against Baylor. Freshman
Jennifer Iseri had another strong outing in the circle against Cal, throwing a complete game giving up just three runs with no walks and two strike outs against the Golden Bears. But
Kanani Aina Cabrales came through in the tourney finale, throwing the final six innings in relief of a nine-inning win over North Dakota State. She gave up just one run on three hits in the outing to earn the win.
Overall, junior
Ulu Matagiese leads UH with a .303 batting average (20-for-66) with three doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI. Freshman utility player
Sarah Muzik is also hitting well at .301. She leads UH with 25 hits and 19 runs scored as the 'Bows' leadoff batter. Lopez has driven in a team-high 16 runs thus far and is hitting .286. She is tied with
Keiki Carlos with six doubles and leads UH with two triples.
