HONOLULU—The No. 21/24 University of Hawai`i softball team (16-5, 0-0 Big West) swept their doubleheader on the third day of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. Parnaby earned her first win of the day, giving up three runs on six hits with seven strike outs and no walks.

The 'Bows took an early 1-0 lead to start the game. Kelly Majam led the home half of the first inning off with a walk. After a strike out, Keiki Carlos hit a grounder to first but the first baseman's flip to the second baseman bounced to the fence allowing Majam to hustle into third. Jessica Iwata then came through with a double to leftfield to score Majam easily.

In the second, Alyssa Villalpando reached first on a fielding error on the shortstop and after a strike out, Villalpando moved to second on a Majam walk. Kiani Wong then pinch ran for Villalpando at second and both runners moved into scoring position on a ground out to first by Kayla Wartner. Wong then scored on a wild pitch with Carlos at bat. Carlos and Iwata both walked to load the bases for Leisha Li`ili`i who drilled a single to right to drive in both Majam and Carlos to give UH a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Vikings got on the scoreboard with a two-run home run over the left field fence by Lauran Bliss, cutting their deficit in half, 4-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, UH erupted for four more runs. Villalpando, Brynne Buchanan and Majam started the inning with three consecutive singles. Wartner then drove them all home by ripping a triple down the first baseline. It was Wartner's third triple of the season and career. Wartner later came home on an opposite-field ground out to second by Iwata. UH led Portland State, 8-2 after five complete innings.

PSU's Brittany Hendrickson drove in Becca Bliss with an RBI double to rightfield to cut UH's lead to 8-3 in the top of the sixth.

Portland State's Anna Bertrand also threw a complete game, giving up eight runs on seven hits with eight walks and seven strike outs.

Hawai'i 8, East Carolina 0 (six innings)
Box Score

Parnaby fired her second complete game of the day and third of the tournament. She retired the first 10 batters in a row before giving up a double—ECU's only hit of the game—to Kristi Oshiro. Parnaby then blanked the Pirates the rest of the way with only a walk at the start of the fifth inning to mar her scorebook. She walked just one batter with eight strike outs in game. It was Parnaby's sixth shut out this season. In three games, she has struck out 30 batters.

Hawai`i jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Majam was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Wartner to rightfield. A walk to Keiki Carlos then loaded the bases. Jessica Iwata's grounder to third was a fielder's choice that got Majam at the plate for the first out. But Li`ili`i then drilled a single to right that drove in both Wartner and Carlos. On the play an errant relay throw home by the second baseman allowed Iwata to hustle across the plate for the third run of the inning.

The 'Bows extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Kelly Majam and Kayla Wartner hit back-to-back home runs to start the inning. For Majam, it was her seventh homer of the season and for Wartner, it marked her fourth. Later with one out, Iwata drew a walk and then Li`ili`i hit a laser shot to straightaway centerfield that just cleared the fence for her third home run in as many games. The ball did not get more than 15 feet off the ground the entire way over the fence.

In the sixth inning, UH ended the game with the mercy rule in effect. Villalpando drew a walk to start the inning and pinch runner Wong entered the game. A failed pick-off attempt allowed her to slide into second safely. Brynne Buchanan then hit a single to third allowing Wong to advance to third. UH then executed a double steal that scored Wong to push UH's lead to 8-0 to end the game.

Sarah Christian took the loss, evening her record at 6-6. She threw two innings giving up three runs on four hits with a walk and strike out. Courtney Smith tossed the following two innings allowing one run on one hit with two strike outs and Mary Beth Smith threw one inning, giving up four runs on two hits with two walks and one strike out.
