HONOLULU – The No. 37 University of Hawai'i men's tennis team concluded the Rainbow Warrior Challenge against a dominating No. 3 Tennessee squad Tuesday morning at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Volunteers—NCAA finalists last season and featuring two players ranked in the top 25—were as advertised, winning all nine singles matches with eight wins in straight sets. Leading Tennessee was the current top-ranked player in the country in Rhyne Williams and John-Patrick Smith, the preseason top-ranked player.
Senior
Dennis Lajola did compete admirably against Williams before falling 6-4, 6-4. Smith had an easier time with junior
Leo Rosenberg in a 6-1, 6-2 win on the No. 2 court. Meanwhile, senior
Jeremy Tweedt, who transferred from Tennessee after his sophomore season, got to face his former team, falling to Tennys Sandgren 6-3, 6-3 on the No. 3 court.
Senior
Daniel Llarenas was the lone Rainbow Warrior to extend his match to a third set. Llarenas took the first set from Taylor Patrick 6-2, before dropping the next two sets by identical scores.
Tennessee was the third ranked team UH faced in less than a week. UH, ranked No. 37 in the country, played No. 13 Louisville in the Rainbow Warrior Challenge on Friday and fell to No. 14 Duke on Saturday in a dual match
