SAN DIEGO — The University of Hawaiʻi men's tennis team saw its season come to a close Thursday morning, falling 4-0 to UC Davis in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championship at the Barnes Tennis Center.

Despite a gritty effort in singles play that saw several matches pushed into deep sets, the fifth-seeded Aggies proved too much for the Rainbow Warriors, clinching the match early to advance to the semifinals.

The morning began with a tightly contested doubles point. After UC Davis took the opening set on Court 1, Hawaiʻi's Azuma Visaya and Toa Maeda fired back with a dominant 6-1 victory over Lucas Bollinger and Max Miller on Court 2. However, the Aggies secured the early 1-0 lead when Perry DiGiulio and Kaveh Taheri outlasted Kent Mueller and Adriano Dzhenev, 6-3, on Court 3.

In singles action, UC Davis quickly extended their lead. Ivan Savkin put the Aggies up 2-0 with a straight-sets win over Dzhenev, followed shortly by Bollinger's 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Visaya at the top flight.

The Rainbow Warriors refused to go quietly, as several matches remained undecided when the dual was clinched. At No. 5 singles, UH's Mueller battled back from a set down to force a third, but Eduardo Gonzalez regained momentum to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, providing the decisive fourth point for UC Davis.

While the loss concludes Hawaiʻi's season and eliminates them from conference tournament contention, the program has much to be proud of, having increased their win total by six over last year.
