Hawai`i White and Black Softball Teams Win Doubleheader

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i softball team split its squad for the 2008 Kama`aina Classic tonight at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The UH-White team won the opening game, 14-1 over BYU-Hawai`i, while UH-Black scored big in the end to defeat Chaminade, 9-0.

Hawai`i's Melissa Gonzalez threw five shut-out innings and earned the win for the 'Bows. She scattered four hits with three walks and three strike outs. Sarah Robinson came in relief and threw the final two innings, giving up one run on two hits with a pair of walks and a strike out.

Kelly Majam, in her first at-bat as a Rainbow Wahine, hit an opposite-field home run to left in the first inning to give UH a 1-0 lead.

In the third, UH erupted for six runs, highlighted by a three-run home run by Audrey Andrade. Traci Yoshikawa then followed with a line-drive double to centerfield fence. She stole third and then was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Alexandra Aguirre. Two batters later, Allison Der got a hit down the rightfield line allowing Katie Grimes to score. Der then scored off a Richie-Anne Titcomb single to push Hawai`i's lead to 7-0.

In the fourth, UH added two runs. They started the inning by loading the bases on two walks and a hit-batter. Jocelyn Enrique and Robinson both had RBI singles.

The 'Bows tacked on five runs in the fifth. Gonzalez had an ripped an RBI-triple down the leftfield line, then stole home later on a double steal. Enrique picked up two more RBI on a double down the leftfield line and later scored on a fielder's choice hit by Mikalemi Tagab-Cruz.

GAME TWO:  Chaminade 0, UH-Black 9

Pitchers Courtney Baughman and Stephanie Ricketts combined on a one-hit shutout over the visiting Silverswords. Baughman fired four innings giving up one hit with six strike outs, while Ricketts threw the three final hitless innings. She had a pair of walks and three strike outs.

Kanani Pu'u-Warren started the scoring for Hawai`i in the bottom of the second when she hit an opposite field, two-run, home run. Three batters later, Dara Pagaduan drove in Kate Adams from third with a single to short to push UH's lead to 3-0.

In the fifth, with two outs, Hawai`i linked together three consecutive hits from Malamaisaua Manuma, Pu`u Warren and Tagab-Cruz. Manuma scored on a single by Tagab-Cruz and Pu`u Warren scored on a double steal.

The 'Bows pulled away in the bottom of the six, socring four runs. Pagaduan drove in two runs with a double and Enrique drove her in with a single up the middle and later scored on an error.

The two-day Kama`aina Classic finshes tomorrow with three games.
