Late Rainbow Rally Falls Short as 'Bows Fall to Fresno State 5-4

Honolulu -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (15-28, 4-13) fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs (24-22, 12-8) 5-4 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. The ticketed attendance for the game was 2,917. Sean Yamashita (2-6) got the loss for Hawai`i while Bob Runyan (7-7) pitched 143 pitches for his win.

The Bulldogs got on the board first when Brad Harper tripled in a run in the second inning. The 'Bows responded in the bottom of the inning as Brent Cook drove in two runs to give Hawai`i the brief lead at 2-1.

Fresno State then scored two runs in the third, one in the fifth and another in the seventh off a Scott Beshears home run to right center field.

The 'Bows managed one run in the eighth inning on a Tim Montgomery sacrifice fly. The Rainbows then rallied in the bottom of the ninth, as Gregg Omori drove in a run on a sacrifice fly that fell just a few feet short of the right field wall. The Rainbows couldn't muster anything else, falling by the final count of 5-4.

Cook led the Rainbows with a 3-for-5 night with two RBI. Lane Nogawa added a 3-for-4 performance with a double and a run scored while Gregg Omori went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow with a 1:05 p.m. game at the Les Murakami Stadium. Ricky Bauer is the probable starter for UH while Zach Minor will go for the Bulldogs.
