Nestled in a unique location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by a vibrant group of culturally diverse people, the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UHM) is a special place that many call home.  At the heart of the University of Hawai’i is the spirit of `Ohana, the Hawaiian word for “family”.  The UHM Athletics Department is home to over 450 student athletes representing different states, cities, countries, and cultures who all come together to form a special `Ohana within their teams, sports, and communities.

The culmination of years of progress in mental health services for student-athletes, the Rainbow Wellness program within the UHM Athletic Department was formed in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic.  Rainbow Wellness provides mental health services for all student-athletes, and is dedicated to promoting, supporting, and maintaining the mental well-being of all Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warrior student-athletes and teams.

As part of our commitment to wellness and health care for all of our Student-Athletes, the UHM Athletics Department is committed to providing mental health services and to making our student-athletes aware of the services available to them.  The Rainbow Wellness program follows the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices by providing health-promoting environments for our athletes, including a range of proactive mental health initiatives. We provide mental health screening, educational sessions for all members of the athletic department, and have referral systems in place for various levels of mental healthcare, all involving appropriately licensed clinicians.

Our Rainbow Wellness program allows for direct and confidential mental health referral –  if you have any questions, concerns, or would like to meet with one of our counselors, you may simply reach out via email at athmh@hawaii.edu.  You will then be contacted by one of our therapists for evaluation and to set up an appointment.  Both in person and telemedicine options are available.

Please note that our Rainbow Wellness program and email is not monitored for any urgent or emergent mental health crises.

Our staff wants to ensure that Kānaka Maoli, Black-identified, Asian American / Pacific Islander-identifed, People of Color, and LGBTQ+ student-athletes get the support they deserve. In light of recent increases in violence and discrimination directed at many of these populations, our Athletic Department stands against and will not condone xenophobia or racism of any kind.  If you are impacted by prejudice, hatred, or discrimination of any form, we are committed to creating a safe space and assisting you.
