1:1 Counseling for Athletes

For athletes that are struggling or having any mental health concerns, our dedicated mental health team is available to address any issues or needs you may have.  Topics can be sport specific or be focused on the general mental health of the athlete.  Athletes are able to have short term or ongoing individual/one on one sessions with our licensed and pre-licensed therapists.  Therapy sessions are available both in-person and virtually by telemedicine.

New Student Support

Transition to college can be challenging, especially for many of the student-athletes who are not from this beautiful island.  The University of Hawai’i is home to many international and non-international student athletes who come from thousands of miles away to pursue their academic and athletic careers here.  Mental health counseling can be beneficial as the students are adjusting to a new community, new support system, as well as new routines and ways of living.

Mental Skills Trainings for Athletes and Teams

Our mental health therapists are available to teach, train, and consult with individuals and teams in order to provide mental skills for “game time” situations and scenarios.  These trainings are typically utilized as planning strategies for high pressure scenarios that student-athletes may face.  The goal of these training sessions are to provide the athletes with the best possible skills to achieve optimal athletic performance as well as support the athletes with the skills to achieve mental well-being on and off the field.

Presentations/Psychoeducation for Coaches, Trainers, Teams, and  Players

Many studies have shown that mental health and wellness for student athletes is not limited to “in sport” situations or topics.  We strive to see our student athletes as a whole person, not just as an athlete.  Because of this, we provide education and presentations for coaches, trainers, teams, and players on a variety of different topics:
  • Coping With and Returning From Injury
  • Transition From Sport (Life After Sport)
  • General Mental Illness (depression, anxiety, eating disorders)
  • General Mental Health Issues (stress, feelings of overwhelm, sleep difficulties, loneliness, grief, sadness, anger, relationship issues)
  • General Mental Wellbeing (healthy coping skills, resiliency, positive support system)
Referrals for Outside Providers/Care

The Rainbow Wellness team seeks to provide the best possible care to the athletes.  In times where more support is needed, we will provide further referrals and connections to outside providers and resources such as registered dietitians, psychiatrists, neurologists, as well as group therapy, ADHD assessments and coping skills, and more.

Mental Health Screening

Each year, our UHM Athletics therapists / team physicians meet with each team and provide evidence based mental health screening tools to provide proactive and preventative mental health services.

Our Rainbow Wellness program allows for direct and confidential mental health referral –  if you have any questions, concerns, or would like to meet with one of our counselors, you may simply reach out via email at athmh@hawaii.edu.  You will then be contacted by one of our therapists for evaluation and to set up an appointment.  Both in person and telemedicine options are available.

Please note this Rainbow Wellness program and email is not monitored for any urgent or emergent mental health crisis.
