Youngern Added to Staff, Coach Throwers

HONOLULU − University of Hawaii track and field head coach Tim Boyce announced the addition of assistant coach Christa Youngern to his staff on Monday. Youngern arrives in Manoa after two seasons at San Jose State where she acted in the same role she will hold under Boyce. 

"Christa continues the tradition of excellent throws coaches at UH," Boyce said. "Her recruiting background and success developing throwers at all levels made her our top choice."

Youngern will enter her 13th season of collegiate coaching, all while overseeing the throwing events, when the 2022 indoor and outdoor seasons begin for the Rainbow Wahine. 

I"'m thrilled to work with Coach Boyce who has demonstrated his fierce commitment to making this team a powerhouse," Youngern said. "Hawai'i Track and Field is a program well on the rise, and I can't wait to see this team compete! It's an exciting time to be a Rainbow Wahine!"

The USATF Level 2 certified coach has made stops at San Jose State, San Francisco State, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and Whiiter College. 

The Southern California native has coached four NCAA national provisional qualifiers, three NCAA Championship competitors during her time at San Francisco State, nurtured six All-Americans, has coached 16 different athletes to school records, helped guide 20 athletes to all-region honors in 2019 and guided the team to a fifth-place finish in the nation, the highest ranking in San Francisco State history. 

At CMS, Youngern had seven NCAA national provisional qualifiers, two All-Americans, and was awarded the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2016. 
Is a USATF Level 2 certified throws coach.
 

Before her coaching days started, Younger was a 2010 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Track and Field Athlete of the Year and is a 2015 Hall of Fame inductee at her alma mater California Lutheran. She holds three school records in the discus, shot put, and hammer throw at CalLu is a two-time All-American, three-time NCAA Nationals competitor in the hammer, discus, and shot put and is the all-time leading point scorer at CalLu.
