SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Friday's action at the Big West Track and Field Championships included a number of highlights produced by the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine at UC Santa Barbara's Pauley Track Facility.
With one day of competition remaining, Hawai'i is in seventh place in the standings with 19 points.
Junior standout
Alexis Brenzil won the silver medal in the javelin after reaching 49.58m (162'8"), which was a personal record and further solidified her place in the UH history book in third. The performance gave the Rainbow Wahine eight points to their team total.
Another source of points for the 'Bows on Friday came courtesy of
Kristen LaCosse in the long jump. Her career-best 5.92m (19'5.25") mark earned her fourth place and five team points.
LaCosse also set herself up for major points in Saturday's events thanks to her times in the prelims on Friday. In the prelims, she finished the 400m hurdles in 1:00.49 for fourth to go with a 100m hurdles time of 14.28 for seventh on the day.
With a time of 4:40.86,
Jessica Cushing-murray took 13th in the prelims of the 1,500m, missing a spot in the finals by just 0.16 seconds.
Raion Black was on the cusp of qualifying for the 100m finals with a time of 11.98 in the prelims for 10th.
Martina Latting ran a time of 12.19 in the 100m. Black was also 0.19 seconds off the qualifying time in the 200m, finishing in ninth in the prelims with a time of 24.58.
Haley Beaumont clocked in at 11:10.94 in the 3,000m steeplechase to take ninth. The time is a second off her career best in the event. In the 1500m,
Olivia Hill set a personal record in 4:51.46, and
Danielle Girard had an 800m time of 2.19.48.
Senior
Nina Bean was UH's top performer in the pole vault on Friday clearing 3.59m (11'9.25"), while Madeline Muilenburg put up a personal-record javelin distance of 39.91m (130'11"), and
Meg Jackson followed with a mark of 38.02m (124'9").
The Big West Track and Field Championships will conclude on Saturday, May 11.
