Softball Hosts Big West Home Opener Against CSUN

Game Notes

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team returns to host their first Big West Conference home games this season against CSUN. The two teams will square off in a single game on Friday, April 8 at 6:00 pm followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 2:00 pm. Saturday is Military Appreciation Day at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The team will be wearing special Under Armour jerseys with patches representing all the different military units in Hawai'i. Fans will enjoy the the Marine Corps Forces Pacific band who will be on hand to play prior to the doubleheader as well as the National Anthem. The First Pitch will be thrown out by Brigadier General Suzanne Vares-Lum and the Univeristy of Hawai'i Air Force ROTC's color guard will also be there for the pre-game festivities. There will also be a Recruiter's Tent at the ballpark on Saturday.
 
The Raibnow Wahine enter the series with a 17-19 overall record and a 1-2 mark in conference. Leading the Hawai'i attack is senior rightfielder Keiki Carlos who has started all 36 games and is hitting a solid .295. She is tied along with Nicole Lopez and Sarah Muzik with 31 hits for the team lead. Freshman third baseman Lopez is hitting at a .277 clip (31-for-112) with a team-high .446 slugging percentage with six doubles, two triples and three home runs. The rookie also leads UH with 18 RBI thus far in the season. Muzik, Hawai'i's freshman leadoff hitter and utility player, is batting .272 (31 for -114) with a team-high 24 runs scored.
 
In the pitching circle, sophomore Brittany Hitchcock comes into the CSUN series with a 7-9 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference. She has a team-low 2.56 ERA in 98.1 innings pitched. She is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA win walks allowed per seven innings (0.36) with just five base on balls to 66 strike outs. She has fired nine complete games with two shut outs. Rookie Jennifer Iseri was used as the No. 2 starter at UC Davis, taking the 1-0 loss against the Aggies this past Saturday. Iseri is 3-3 overall with a 3.60 ERA in 44.2 innings pitched. Junior Kanani Aina Cabrales closed the final two games against the Aggies last week. She is 7-7 overall with a 3.58 ERA in 97.2 innings pitched. She has 28 walks to 60 strike outs and has held opponents to a .243 batting average.
 
The Matadors come to Hawai'i with a 21-16 overall record and a 1-2 record in conference. The speedy Taylor Glover leads the league with a .508 batting average (61-for-27) The offensive threat has scored 27 runs with eight doubles, three triples and two home runs thus far with a team-high 24 RBI. She is also 13-of-14 in stolen bases. Savannah Horvath is hitting just a shade under .300 at .294 (35-for-119) with a team-high 35 runs scored 10 doubles and eight home runs. She also leads the Matadors with 15 stolen bases in 18 attempts. Ariana Wassmer is right behind Horvath, hitting .293 (29-for-99) .
 
CSUN utilizes four pitchers in their staff, led by Taylor Troost who is 6-7 overall with a 3.44 ERA in 93.2 innings pitched. Daphne Pofek is 8-4 overall with a 3.56 ERA in 72.2 innings pitched with 35 walks and 49 strike outs. Rebecca Bell is 3-4 with a 3.50 ERA in 60.0 innings while Katie Chenault is 4-1 with a 4.62 ERA in 30.1 innings.

Promotions: First Hawaiian Bank is the series sponsor and will provide great prizes for the winners of the popular "Ballpark Bingo." Saturday is "MilitaryAppreciation Day" at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The team will be wearing special fatigue-type jerseys designed by Under Armour for the game. Fans will enjoy listening to the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band. Brigadier General Suzanne Vares-Lum will the throwing out the first pitch while the University of Hawai'i Air Force ROTC will be presenting its Color Guard. There will also be a Recruiter's table at the ballpark.

Series History: Hawai'i leads the series against CSUN, 14-9-1. Last year, UH won the series in Northridge, 2-1, winning the series opener, 4-3, before falling in the second game 0-2. But UH bounded back to take the series finale, 2-1.
