Softball Blanked By UC Davis In Doubleheader

DAVIS, Calif.-The University of Hawai'i softball team was shutout in Saturday's doubleheader at UC Davis. The Aggies won the three-game series, 2-1 by defeating the Rainbow Wahine twice, 1-0 and 3-0 at La Rue Field in Davis, Calif. Hawai'i falls to 17-19 overall and 1-2 in the Big West, while the Aggies improve to 13-17 overall and 2-1 in conference.

The Aggies posted the only run of the game when Christina Guidry led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run to left field. After a ground out back to the pitcher, UC Davis' Taylor Peters drew a walk and Alexis Carney got an infield single to third to put runners at first and second with one out. Kanani Aina Cabrales then entered the game in relief of Jennifer Iseri in the pitching circle. Aina Cabrales struck out the first batter she faced and then got a fly out to centerfield to end the inning.

Iseri threw the first 2.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with a walk. Aina Cabrales threw the final 3.2 innings. She did not allow a run and gave up just one hit with a walk and three strike outs.

UC Davis' Leah Munden earned the win to improve to 8-6 overall. She fired 6.1 scoreless innings giving up five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. J Vela got the final two outs of the game to earn the save.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies broke open the scoreless game. UCD's Kelly Zboralske led off the frame with a double to the right-centerfield gap. Zboralske then scored when Megan Salazar followed with a single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Aina Cabrales then entered the game for her second relief appearance of the day to take over for Brittany Hitchcock. Aina Cabrales struck out the first two batters she faced, but then she gave up a single to left and then a bases-clearing triple by Carney to right-centerfield to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead after five complete innings.

Hawai'i tried to answer back in the top of the sixth as UH started the inning with back-to-back hits by Tayana Mata and Keiki Carlos, but the Aggies then lifted starter Andrea Reynolds and Sara Cardona came in and shut the door on the UH offense, getting a fly out to center, a pop-out to first and groundout to thwart the UH rally.

Hitchcock took the loss for Hawai'i, dropping her record to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in conference. She threw four-plus innings, allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and three strike outs. Aina Cabrales came in to throw the final two-plus innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strike outs.

UC Davis' Reynolds improved to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in conference. She threw five shutout innings, scattering seven hits with two strikeouts. Cadona earned the save after coming in to close the game. She did not allow a hit or a run in two-plus innings of work with two strikeouts.

It was the first time that Hawai'i was shut-out in both games of a conference doubleheader since 2003 when UH lost at Fresno State while both teams were members of the Western Athletic Conference, 7-0 and 6-0 on April 6. UC Davis was able to hold UH scoreless in 20-of-21 innings in the three-games series.

For the series, Mata led UH hitting .556 (5-for-9) with a double and a run scored. She hit safely in all three games, as did Carlos, who hit an even .500 against the Aggies. Carlos was 4-for-8 at the the plate for the week and now leads UH overall with a .295 batting average (31-for-105).

The Rainbow Wahine will return home to host CSUN in a three-game Big West series. The first game will be on Friday, April 8 at 6:00 pm. Saturday, April 9 is Military Appreciation Day at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 2:00 pm.
