Box Score (pdf)HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii baseball team (6-8) fell to the No. 19 Michigan Wolverines (8-3) on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium in the series opener, as the Wolverines pitching staff put together a three-hitter for the shutout after getting hot themselves late to deliver the 6-0 loss.
Both squads tallied a hit in the opening frame, as Jake Bivens led off the game for Michigan with a single through the right side, while UH first baseman
Eric Ramirez countered with a lined single into left field. However, Thursday night's non-conference contest quickly fell into a pitcher's duel
The Michigan offense broke up a string of five scoreless innings, changing gears in the sixth when Cody Bruder put the first Wolverines run on the board against UH starter
Brendan Hornung, on a simple RBI single deep in the shortstop pocket. Four pitches later Drew Lugbauer carved a shot down the first base line for a two-run double. Michael Brdar took a full count pitch to right field for a fourth run and ended the night for Hornung, pushing UM to a 4-0 advantage.
UH reliever
Isaac Friesen closed out the frame and nearly worked out of a jam in the seventh, but a two-run single by Jonathan Engleman extended the Wolverines' advantage to 6-0, where it would remain, as left-hander
Patrick Martin shut down U-M with four strikeouts across the final two innings.
U-M starter Oliver Jaskie (3-0) went 5.1 innings of three-hit baseball for the win, while four relievers, Mac Lozier, William Tribucher, Troy Miller and Grant Reuss covered 3.2 innings without a UH hit, walking one in the stretch. Jaskie walked three and struck out three.
Taking the loss for UH, Hornung (2-3) pitched 5.2 innings with eight hits and four earned runs, walking one and striking out four.
Ramirez,
Alan Baldwin and
Josh Rojas each tallied hits for the 'Bows. Shortstop
Jacob Sheldon-Collins extended his reached base streak to 13 games, but saw his hitting streak cut short at 12 games tonight.
The Rainbow Warriors and Wolverines return to action on Friday at 6:35 p.m. in the second of the four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium.
