LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team fell in a wild back-and-forth 10-9 slugfest to Big West leader UC San Diego in the series opener on Thursday night at Triton Ballpark.
The loss also marked UH's first-ever against UCSD in Triton Ballpark. The Rainbow Warriors entered Thursday's game with a perfect 6-0 all-time record against the Tritons on the road.
The Rainbow Warriors (15-12, 5-8 Big West) built an early 5-1 advantage, backed by timely offensive execution. In the third inning,
Draven Nushida delivered an RBI groundout, followed immediately by a
Tate Shimao two-run double to left field to make it 3-0.
After the Tritons scored in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1, Hawai'i added two more in the sixth when
Josh Martin scored on a wild pitch and
Noah Rodriguez lined an RBI single to right field.
UC San Diego (13-13, 9-1 Big West) erased the deficit with a massive six-run bottom of the sixth inning. The Tritons utilized three two-run hits in the frame, including a double by Anthony Potestio and singles by Trevian Martinez and Delshaun Lanier, chasing relievers
Liam O'Brien and
Saul Soto to take a 7-5 lead.
The the Rainbow Warriors fought back with a single run in the seventh and two in the eighth to reclaim the lead. Martin narrowed the gap to 7-6 with an RBI single in the seventh, and in the eighth, Hawai'i capitalized on a fielding error by the Tritons' second baseman to score three unearned runs and retake a 9-7 lead. Nushida drove in a run on a groundout, Shimao poked an RBI single to shortstop and Martin drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run.
However, the Tritons answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead for good. Michael Crossland laced an RBI double to left field, and J.C. Allen provided the decisive blow with a two-run double to left center, putting UC San Diego back in front, 10-9. Julian Cazares retired the 'Bows in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Shimao paced the Hawai'i offense, finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Martin reached base safely in all five plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and two RBIs.
The Rainbow Warriors and Tritons will play game two of the series Friday at 3:00 p.m. HT.
