Senior outside hitter
Brook Sedore led the Rainbow Warriors (4-1, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) with a game-high 19 kills, 11 digs, and two blocks. Middle-blocker
Taylor Averill also contributed 15 kills, hitting at .478 percent, and seven blocks. Meanwhile, UCSB's Jacob Delson and Kevin Donohue netted 16 kills apiece for the Gauchos (4-1, 0-1 MPSF).
After trailing right behind UCSB to start off Set 1, the 'Bows took their first lead of the night, 10-9 following an attack error by the Gauchos. However, UCSB answered back with three-points in a row, and continued to remain one step ahead of UH until
Sinisa Zarkovic (14 kills, six blocks) won a joust on the net to tie it 19-19. Following back-to-back double-blocks by
Davis Holt (seven blocks, six kills) and Zarkovic, the 'Bows took their biggest lead of the night 23-22, with Sedore's sixth kill of the night cementing the 25-23 win.
The Warriors took control of Set 2 early on with a 7-2 run over UCSB, but the Gauchos came back quickly, outscoring UH 8-3 to bring themselves within two points, but after two kills by Averill and Holt, assisted by UCSB's hitting and service errors, UH prevailed all the way to set-point 24-20. The Gauchos pulled off three unanswered points to follow, but Zarkovic sealed off the set with his fourth kill of the night.
UH started off strong in Set 3, leading by as many as six-points over the Gauchos, but after trailing 23-19, UCSB scored five straight to steal the lead from UH, 24-23. Zarkovic was quick to answer back for the 'Bows, tying the score 24-24, but the Gauchos finished off the set with back-to-back kills for a 26-24 win.
UCSB held the pace for much of Set 4, but once UH tied it 21-21 following a Gauchos' attack error, the Warriors prevailed and rallied to take a one-point advantage after pressuring UCSB into another error. After three service errors in a row during the final stretch with the tied scored 25-25, Holt and sophomore
Kupono Fey cemented the victory with back-to-back kills to end it all. Fey recorded a career-high eight kills, and added 10 digs and three blocks.
UH will face UCSB again on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 5:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
