Shawna-Lei Kuehu, who scored 15 points to become the 18th Rainbow Wahine to join the 1,000 career point-club and just the 10th player in UH history to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
In UH's win over the Seasiders, Hawai`i started the game fast right out of the gate, scoring the first 14 points before BYUH was able to hit one of two free throws with 15:22 left in the half. The 'Bows went on to lead 26-3 with 12:20 left on the clock. UH would close the first half with a 33-point lead, 50-17. The 'Bows picked up right where they left off in the second half, increasing their lead to as much as 54 points. The 52-point margin of victory tied for the third highest in school history. All 14 UH players suited up saw action on the floor with 13 scoring at least one point in the game. Sampton was an efficient 6-of-7 in field goals and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line to score her career-high 16 points. She also had four rebounds, an assist, and two steals.
Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 11 points and was 5-of-8 with a trey and two boards to go with three assists, while rookie
Sarah Toeaina scored a career-high 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting with a trey.
Overall, a trio of Hawai'i seniors are averaging over 10 points a game--led by Kuehu who leads the squad in both points and rebounds, averaging 13.7 points and 7.7 boards per game. She has a team-highs with 25 assists, 12 blocked shots and has made 31 free throws in 48 attempts. Kuehu has scored in double-figures five times this season--including a career-high 29 points against California. Also, Kuehu is currently ranked No. 7 with 96 career blocked shots. she needs 11 more to tie Bryna Jones (1984-87) at No. 6 at 107.
Ashleigh Karaitiana is averaging 11.7 points a game and is the only Rainbow Wahine to have scored in double-figures in all nine games thus far. She leads Hawai'i with 18 steals, an .810 free throw percentage (17-of-21), and 12-made 3-pointers. She is also averaging a team-high 33.8 minutes per game. Karaitiana is tied for second on the team with 23 assists and is third with 5.2 rebounds a game.
Morgan Mason continues her steady play, averaging 10.0 points and 5.1 boards a game. She is tied with Karaitiana with 23 assists and has 12 steals through nine games. Mason has recorded double-digits in points in four games this year--including a career-high 23 at Denver in which she spurred the 'Bows to the road win on Nov. 16.
Hawai'i has faced Loyola Marymount 10 times and have an 8-2 record against the Lions. The 'Bows won the first eight meetings, but dropped the last two meetings which were in 2006 and '08 respectively. UH is 5-0 at home; 3-1 in Los Angeles and 0-1 on a neutral court. Currently LMU is 2-6 and are led by four starters who are averaging over 10 points a game. Deanna Johnson leads the Lions with 12.5 points a game and 29 assists while Leslie Lopez-Wood is right behind her averaging 12.4. Lopez-Wood leads her squad making 21-of-59 3-point shots and is 14-of-15 from the free throw line for a .933 percentage. Taylor Anderson is scoring 10.9 points a game while pulling down 7.5 boards and Sophie Taylor is scoring 10.6 points with team-highs of nine blocked shots and nine steals. Emily Ben-Jumbo is the final starter who leads the Lions with 8.3 rebounds a game.
Hawai'i holds a 1-1 record against the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield. The last meeting was a 84-74 UH win on Dec. 29, 2010 in Honolulu. CSUB is 6-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 at home at the Icardo Center. Tyonna Outland leads CSUB with 17.5 points and 6.1 rebounds a game. She has 15 blocked shots and 24 assists. Brooklynn Hinkens is scoring 12.7 points a game with a team-high 16 steals and 22 made 3-pointers. Batabe Zempare leads the Roadrunners with 9.0 rebounds a game and Alyssa Shannon has a team-high 50 assists (5.6 a game).
