HONOLULU—The No. 20/23 University of Hawai`i softball team (22-7, 0-0 Big West) swept their Saturday doubleheader to capture the 2013 Chevron Spring Fling Touranment title. The Rainbow Wahine knocked of Baylor, 5-1 before edging out Syracuse in 12 innings, 3-2 in the championship game. Senior southpaw
Kaia Parnaby set a new UH single-game record with 17 strike outs in relief against the Orange. Parnaby also set new career-highs with her 20th win and 214 strike outs on the season. She earned both wins on the day, earning a complete game win over No. 19/14 Baylor and then coming in relief and firing eight more innings in the win against the Orange. Senior centerfielder

Sharla Kliebenstein blasted the walk-off home run to down the Orange for the win.

Parnaby tied her career-high with her 19th win of the season in the win over Baylor. She raised her record to 19-3 with her 21st complete game of the season. She shut down the powerful Bears' offense through the first five innings—taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning. She gave up one run on four hits with no walks and eight strike outs.
Baylor had a rally going in the bottom of the fourth. After a fly out to left, Kathy Shelton reached on a single and after a strike out, Sarah Smith was plunked to put runners at first and second. But Parnaby got the final out of the frame on a fly out to right to squash rally.
Hawai`i broke the scoreless game in the top of the second.
Brynne Buchanan reached on a single to start things and Majam followed with a two-run blast over the centerfield fence for the quick 2-0 lead. For Majam it was her team-leading eighth home run of the season and her 62nd of her career. It also marked the 200th career run that Majam has scored for UH.
In the sixth inning, UH added three runs to increase their lead to 5-0.
Jessica Iwata started the rally with a one-out double to the left-centerfield gap. Leisha Li`ili then walked to put runners on first and second.
Sharla Kliebenstein then executed a sacrifice bunt but the pitcher's throw sailed over the first baseman to the fence allowing Iwata to score while pinch runner
Dori Ann Sugai and Kliebenstein hustling into scoring position.
Jazmine Zamora then came through with a single down the leftfield line to drive in Sugai. Later, with the bases loaded, Majam drew a walk to force Zamora across the plate for UH's fifth and final run of the game.
Baylor scored one run in the bottom of the sixth. The Bears started the inning with two consecutive hits to put runners on first and second. UH got the next two batters out on a pop up to third and a fly out to left. But Baylor scored on an RBI single by Smith that drove in Jordan Strickland.
Baylor's Heather Stearns took the loss, dropping her record to 7-2. She gave up five runs on five hits with three runs and seven strike outs in 5.1 innings. Whitney Canion closed the game, throwing the final 1.2 innings. She spaced two hits with two walks and a strike out.

Senior pitcher
Kaia Parnaby set a new UH record with 17 strike outs in the game, in eight innings of relief en route to the win. Parnaby gave up one run and one hit with three walks. She also set a new career-high earning her 20th win of the season as well as a new career-high with 214 strike outs thus far this season. Parnaby is now 20-3 with a 1.26 ERA in 163.2 innings pitched. In her five appearances in the tournament, she went 4-1 with two shut outs and four walks with 49 strike outs.
Syracuse scored first, posting a single run in the top of the first when Julie Wambold hit an RBI single to drive in Shirley Daniels from second to give the Orange the early 1-0 lead. The Orange tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Daniels scored on a wild pitch.
Hawai`i tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
Brynne Buchanan got a two-out single up the middle and Majam drove her in with a blast over the rightfield fence. It was Majam's team-leading ninth home run of the season and 63rd of her career.
The 'Bows had a scoring opportunity in the sixth.
Keiki Carlos led off with a double down the leftfield line. Two batters later, Li`ili`i hit a single to right to put runners at first and third. Kliebenstein then hit a grounder to third who threw to first. Carlos broke for home on the throw to one, but was cut down at the plate on a good throw home and tag.
Both teams couldn't muster much offense for the next five innings, until Kliebenstein led off the 12th inning with the solo shot that sailed high over the centerfield fence to end game. It was Kliebenstein's second home run of the tournament and fifth home run of the season. It marked UH's second extra-inning win in the season and the tourney. Earlier in the week, UH held off Utah, 1-0 in eight innings on Wednesday.
Sharla Kliebenstein ended the game when she led off the 12th inning by launching a bomb over the centerfield fence. It her second home run of the tourney in the bottom of the 12th inning to win the game. It was her fifth homer of the season.

Loie Kesterson got the start and threw the first four innings of the game. She gave up one run on six hits with a walk and two strike outs in her fifth appearance of the season.
It was Syracuse's third game of the day after defeating Utah in the day's opener, 2-1 and then knocking of No. 5/4 California 8-1 to advance to the tourney's championship game. Syracuse pitcher Lindsay Taylor did yeoman's work, getting a save against Utah with an inning of work. She came back to earn the complete game win over Cal and then threw the 11-inning game vs. Hawai`i. Taylor gave up three runs on eight hits with a walk and four strike outs in the championship game.
Hawai`i next makes returns to the Big West Conference season after spending the last 16 years in the Western Athletic Conference. UH opens at Cal State Northridge with a doubleheader on March 23 and a single game on March 24.
