HONOLULU—The No. 20/23 University of Hawai`i softball team (18-5, 0-0 Big West) shut out East Carolina, 4-0 on Tuesday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium .
Kaia Parnaby won her 13th straight game with her seventh shutout of the season. The 'Bows scored all four runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to the win.
Parnaby struck out 12 and walked none in her 21st complete game of the year. In her last five outings, she has struck out 57 batters with just four walks. She raised her record to 16-2, tying her entire win total for 2012.
It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the fifth inning when UH strung together three consecutive hits as they erupted for four runs.
Alyssa Villalpando reached when a grounder went through the second baseman. But pinch runner
Kiani Wong was erased at second on a fielder's choice on the catcher who made a good throw to two.
Kelly Majam and
Kayla Wartner were both plunked to load the bases.
Keiki Carlos then drove a single to center that drove in pinch runner
Brynne Buchanan from third. On the play, the centerfielder misfielded the ball which allowed Majam to come around to score as well.
Jessica Iwata followed with a single to center that scored Wartner, but Carlos was cut down at the plate on a good one-hop throw to the catcher for the second out. Leisha Li`ili`i kept things going with a double to right that allowed Iwata to cross the plate for UH's fourth run.
Hawai`i will begin its final non-conference tourney on Wednesday as the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament gets underway. No. 5 California, No. 19 Baylor, Syracuse and Utah will all be playing in the four-day tournament.
