HONOLULU—The No. 21/24 University of Hawai`i softball team (17-5, 0-0 Big West) defeated Syracuse (5-10, 0-0 Big East) on Monday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Senior pitcher Kaia Parnaby tied the UH record with 15 strike outs for the second time in four days. Kayla Wartner hit her fifth home run of the season and Jazmine Zamora and Kaile Nakao both had RBI-doubles in the bottom of the sixth.

It marked Parnaby's second straight one-hit victory. She struck out eight and walked just one. She retired the last 12 straight batters in a row. The one blemish on the scoresheet was a solo home run in the top of the second inning. She allowed just one base runner after the hit on a walk that started the fourth inning.

The Orange took an early 1-0 lead on said solo home run to left-centerfield by Danielle Chitkowski in the top of the second.

Hawai`i rallied with two outs to knot the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Zamora started things with a single that hit first base and bounced into rightfield. Alyssa Villalpando then walked to put runners at first and second. Nakao then drove in Zamora with a single up the middle. On the play both Villalpando and Nakao moved into scoring position on an errant throw home by the centerfielder. Kelly Majam then hit a line shot to center, but the Syracuse centerfielder leaped to make the catch for the final out.

The 'Bows then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a Kayla Wartner solo-blast over the scoreboard in rightfield. It was Wartner's fifth home run of the season.

Hawai`i then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead to 4-0. Sharla Kliebenstein led the inning off with a little looping single that died off the backhand glove of the second baseman running to her right. Kliebenstein then advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI double hit to the left-centerfield gap by Zamora. Later after a foul, pop-up to first, Nakao drove in her second run of the game. She hit a fly to left that the leftfielder misjudged and fell in for a double.

Syracuse's Lindsay Taylor took the loss dropping her record to 1-7. She threw five complete innings and gave up two runs on five hits with three walks and seven strike outs. Stacy Kuwin threw the final two innings, giving up two runs on three hits.

Hawai`i will face East Carolina in a single game on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. The game will follow Syracuse vs. East Carolina at 4:00 p.m. Hawai`i will then begin their final non-conference tournament of the season. The Chevron Spring Fling Tournament will run from Wednesday, Mar. 13- Saturday, Mar. 16. Baylor, California, Syracuse and Utah will all participating.
