SEATTLE, Wash. – University of Hawai'i track and field athletes continued to show improvement this season with at least 10 athletes setting personal bests and six placing in the top three in their respective events at the University of Washington's Open Meet Sunday at Dempsey Indoor.
Also on the current road trip, Rainbow Wahine athletes set 11 personal marks during the Husky Classic Friday and Saturday, including
Zhane Santiago, who broke the school's 60-meter hurdles record.
Freshman
Charlinda Ioane tied for third in the shot put with a new personal best of 46-2 (14.07m). Just one day after setting two PRs in the long jump and triple jump, junior
Amanda Alvarez eclipsed her mark in the long jump with a leap of 18-9.75 (5.73m) to finish in a tie for third place.
Senior
Samantha Balentine took second in the high jump after clearing 5-7 (1.70m). Sophomore
Robyn Morioka led a UH contingent of three pole vaulters finishing in the top three. The Torrance, Calif., native cleared 12-4.5 (3.77m) while senior
Camie Kohashi and junior
Cecilia Durocher tied for third at 11-4.5 (3.47m).
Freshman
Morgan Struble set two PRs in the 60-meter hurdles (9.23) and 400-meters (59.94). For the second straight day, junior
Samantha Esperanza set a PR in the 60-meter hurdles (8.93). Two other Rainbow Wahine eclipsed new marks in the 400-meters – junior
Shallyn Jackson (1:00.52) and freshman
Kayla Kirk (1:00.65).
Other UH athletes setting PRs were
Michelle Wicker (5-1/1.55m) and Santiago (4-11/1.50m) in the high jump and sophomore
Louise Mulvey (3:01.27) and junior Tiare Nakashima (3:09.22) in the 1000-meter run.
The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu to host the Terry Albritton Memorial, Feb. 16 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field.
