HONOLULU - In front of the largest sell out crowd of the season,
Jon Flinn delivered his best outing of the season and the University of Hawai'i baseball team topped Nevada 8-3 on senior night at Les Murakami Stadium. 4,793 tickets were issued with 3,452 fans coming through the turnstiles. The Rainbows improved to 30-23 and finish the Western Athletic Conference regular season at 10-8.
In what was projected to be a staff day, Flinn threw 103 pitches in seven complete innings to win his first start of the season. He allowed just one earned run while posting a season-high six strikeouts to improve to 2-1. Senior
Riley Welch came on and pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings for his first career save.
Max Duval and
Garrett Champion both had two hits and two runs with Champion adding one RBI.
Kaeo Aliviado posted two hits, one run, and two RBI, and
Stephen Ventimilia added two hits and one run.
Wolf Pack starter Troy Marks (1-4) could not make it out of the third inning, allowing four earned runs before being lifted with one out in the second inning and taking the loss. Jay Anderson posted two hits and one run to lead Nevada who fell to 31-23 overall and finiished 11-7 in the WAC.
After two scoreless innings, Nevada scored a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. With runners at second and third, Bennett snared a ball hit to him at third, but an errant throw to first base allowed two Nevada runs to come home.
The 'Bows got on the board in the third inning and did so in a big way. Three straight base hits by Champion, Duval, and Ventimilia loaded the bases for Aliviado, who promptly ripped a pitch to right field to score Champion and Duval and tie the game. Pi'ikea Kitamura (1 H, 2 RBI) kept the party going with another two-RBI hit, scoring Ventimilia from third and Aliviado from second to push the lead to 6-2 after three innings.
