HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team completed the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational over the weekend with several notable performances. The event was held Thursday through Saturday at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
In the triple jump, senior
Madara Apine broke her own school record with a mark of 41-8.5 (12.71m). She previously held the record set at last year's USC Invitational. Apine was the top collegiate finisher and placed third overall. Her mark ranks No. 1 in the Western Athletic Conference this season.
A week after posting the school's ninth fastest time in the 3000-meter steeplechase, freshman
Kevyn Murphy moved up to fourth all-time after finishing the race in 11:29.61. That mark was the fastest by a UH athlete in four years.
In the javelin, freshman
Kellsey Trimble threw a season-best 133-7 (40.72m), the sixth-best mark in school history.
Three of UH's hammer throwers finished in the top six of the event with
Emma MacCorquodale placing second after a throw of 175-3 (53.41m).
Joanna Franke-Kuhn was fourth with a seasonal-best of 167-10 (51.16m) while
Anika Borden was sixth at 156-3 (47.52m).
The Rainbow Wahine took second and third place in the high jump with
Sarah Saddleton and
Samantha Balentine each jumping 5-7 (1.70m) with Saddleton getting the edge based on fewer misses.
In the discus competition, junior
TeRina Keenan was fourth with a mark of 150-10 (45.98m). Senior
Careena Onosai placed ninth at 140-2 (42.72m).
The Rainbow Wahine will next compete in four meets covering four days at the Mt. SAC Relays, CSULA Twilight Meet, Bryan Clay Invitational, and Beach Invitational throughout southern California.
