Softball Hosts Boise State in Crucial WAC Series

Series Notes

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (30-13, 8-4 WAC) returns home to host a crucial Western Athletic Conference series against Boise State (26-15, 9-3 WAC). The Broncos are in third place and one game ahead of UH in a tight WAC race. The series will begin on Fri., Apr. 22 at 6:00 pm with a doubleheader at 4:00 pm on Sat., Apr. 23. On Saturday UH will wear special pink uniforms in support of Under Armour's “Power in Pink” campaign for breast cancer awareness.
 
The 'Bows are coming off a 2-1 series win over Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. Hawai'i shut-out the Lady Techsters in the first two games, 6-0 and 4-0 before falling in the series' finale, 1-0 on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Senior rightfielder Jenna Rodriguez was clutch for Hawai'i accounting for seven of UH's 10 runs scored on the weekend. She hit .375 (3-for-8) with two home runs, three runs scored and six RBI. Rodriguez drove in a season-high four runs in the opener and led UH for the series with a 1.125 slugging percentage and a .545 on-base percentage. Sophomore centerfielder Kelly Majam led UH with a .455 batting average (5-for-11) with a double and an RBI, while junior leftfielder Alex Aguirre got back on track, hitting .444 (4-for-9). The pitchers continued their strong performances. Junior Stephanie Ricketts went 1-1 with a one-hit shut-out in the first game, but fell in the second game 1-0. Reigning WAC Pitcher of the week, sophomore Kaia Parnaby, fired a four-hit shut-out and tied her career-high with 12 strike outs in her appearance.
 
Overall, sophomore shortstop, Jessica Iwata leads Hawai'i with a .308 (40-of-130) average, 11 home runs and 35 runs scored. Freshman catcher Sharla Kliebenstein is tied for the team lead with Iwata in home runs and has driven in a team-high 34 runs thus far. She is tied for second with Majam in runs scored with 28 and is also second with seven doubles.
 
In the circle, Ricketts remains the anchor of the team. She is 18-10 overall and 5-3 in the WAC. Overall she has fired 186.2 innings with a 1.57 ERA and 207 strike outs to 36 walks. She has tossed eight shut outs and 25 complete games this season. Parnaby has an overall record of 11-3 and is 3-1 in conference action. In all games this season, she is carrying a 0.99 ERA with 22 walks and 115 strike outs with four shut outs and 13 complete games.
 
Scouting Boise State
The Broncos come to Honolulu with a 26-15 overall record and 9-3 mark in conference—one game in front of the 'Bows in the WAC race. Boise State has been solid all season and as a team is hitting .309 and have five players hitting over .300. Freshman utility player Devon Bridges leads the pack with a .406 batting average (43-for-106), 11 home runs, 44 RBI and a .764 slugging percentage. Sophomore Holly Burke is hitting at a .383 clip tied with a team-high 51 hits. She leads BSU with 30 runs scored, eight doubles while junior Allie Crump is hitting .366 (41-for-112) with four doubles, nine home runs and 24 RBI. Also, keep an eye out for Kellie Caplan and Tazz Weatherly who both have stolen 12 bases a piece.
 
On the mound, the Broncos' Aubray Zell leads the staff with a 1.65 ERA and a 10-2 record. In the WAC, Zell is carrying a 1.17 ERA and is 5-1 with just two walks and 22 strike otus. Overall, she has thrown seven complete games and four shut outs in 85.0 innings. She has 78 strike outs and 11 walks while holding opponents to a team-low .221 average. Lela Work is 4-5 overall with a 3.92 ERA with 59.0 innings while Crump is 11-5 with a 3.96 ERA and a team-high 100.2 innings. She has struck out 95 while walking 56.

Television Coverage: KFVE-TV (Ch. 5) will televise Saturday's doubleheader with Jim Leahey (play-by-play) and Lori Santi (color commentary). The second game of Saturday's doubleheader will be joined immediately following the UH men's volleyball MPSF tournament game. First game of doubleheader will be aired delayed on Saturday night at 11:30 pm with a rebroadcast of both games starting at 12:30 pm on Sunday.
