HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i softball team (10-13) defeated Utah, 1-0 in a pitcher's duel of a game. UH's
Stephanie Ricketts fired a one-hit shut-out with four strike outs, while Utah's Brittany Parker and Lindsey Palmer combined for a one-hitter in the loss tonight on the opening day of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.
The game was 0-0 through the first three innings before the 'Bows posted the game's first and only run in the bottom of the fourth. #Amanda Tauali`i
started the inning by drawing a walk. Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu# then hit a hard grounder up the middle. On the play the second baseman kicked the ball to the shortstop who deftly picked it up and fired to first for the unusual 4-6-3 double play. With two outs in the inning,
Audrey Andrade walked, then
Richie-Anne Titcomb picked up UH's only hit of the night with a single to rightfield. Another walk to #Kanani Pu`u-Warren# loaded the bases, then a wild pitch with
Katie Grime up to bat allowed the run to score.
For Ricketts (5-4), it was her seventh complete game of the season. It also marked her third one-hit shut out this season. She faced just one batter over the minimum, 22, and retired the last 13 batters in a row.
Parker suffered the loss, giving up the one run and allowing just one hit. She fanned five batters but also walked six. Palmer did not allow a hit in the final 2.1 innings. She walked one and struck out two.
The 'Bows continue their play in their Spring Fling Tourney tomorrow. First they battle Wisconsin at 5:00 pm and then No. 9 California at 7:00 pm.
