Hawai`i Softball's Black, White Squads Win Two

The University of Hawai`i softball team's black and white teams swept their two games on the final day of the fall Kama`aina Classic. The UH-Black squad defeated BYU-Hawai`i, 15-0 in the first game of the day. UH-White then concluded the tournament with an 18-0 win over Chaminade at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. 

In four games, the pair of Hawai`i squads outscored their opponents, 56-1 in the scrimmage tournament.

Senior Rainbow Wahine pitcher Courtney Baughman and freshman Stephanie Ricketts fired a combined no-hit shutout over the BYUH Seasiders. The duo faced just 23 batters in the scrimmage. The starter, Baughman, threw four solid innings, with three strike outs. Ricketts then closed the game out, shutting down the Seasiders' offense. She struck out six of the 10 batters she faced.
 
Hawai`i's offense racked up 17 hits on the game, including seven doubles. Freshman centerfielder, Kelly Majam led the 'Bows at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Her first double ricocheted off the base of the left-centerfield fence, while her second bounced off the top plastic rim of the outfield wall. She also scored two runs and drove in four runs. Senior shortstop Julie Franklin went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a double. Junior first baseman, Amanda Tauali'i went 2-for-2 with two RBI and junior rightfielder, Kanani Pu'u-Warren was 2-for-4 with a double.

In a battle of Pac-West teams, it was the Seasiders that prevailed over the Silverswords, 7-2 in the second game of the day. It was a tight ballgame with BYUH leading 3-2 going into the fifth inning. But the Seasiders capitalized on a key error with the bases loaded that allowed three runs to score. 

Three pitchers for BYUH combined for the victory. Julianne Talavea started and threw the first two innings, Janeece Veazie threw the middle three innings, and Katresha Veazie closed the game's final two innings. All together, the three had three walks and Katresha Veazie had all three of the team's strike outs. They yielded two runs on only six hits.

For Chaminade, Kasye Lalau threw the first three innings, giving up three runs on five hits with three strike outs and two walks. Chelsi Walls then came in to throw the final four innings. She gave up four run, none of which were earned, on three hits with four walks and two strike outs.

The UH-White squad pounded out 18 runs on 19 hits to down Chaminade 18-0 in the final game of the Kama`aina Classic. The 'Bows had seven extra base hits with five players getting multiple hits. Senior catcher, Stacey Yamada made the most of her at-bats. She was 2-for-3 with a double and a three-run home run. Senior outfielder, Tanisha Milca had a team-high four hits in six at-bats and she also crossed the plate four times with a double and one RBI. Senior second baseman Richie-Anne Titcomb was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and a pair of RBI. Sophomore pitcher Melissa Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with a team-high five RBI and a double.
 
The pitching combination of Gonzalez and freshman Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu were able to shut down the Silverswords offense, scattering three hits in seven innings. Gonzalez threw the first five innings, giving up one single with four strike outs and no walks. Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu came in relief and fired the final two innings, giving up two hits with no walks.
 
The 'Bows' have a week off before their next game, which will be against their Alumnae on November 21, 6:00 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The regular season starts up in the spring with the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic, Feb. 5-7. It'll be an instant barometer of how strong the 2009 edition of the Rainbow Wahine will be with Oklahoma, LSU, and UAB coming to town.
