HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (16-34, 5-19 WAC) fell to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (21-31, 7-20) 8-6 on the Rainbows senior night Saturday. Casey Blalock (8-7) picked up the win for the Bulldogs while
Ricky Bauer (1-7) got the loss. The ticketed attendance was 3,112. The game marked the last home game of the season and the last game at the Les Murakami Stadium for 10 seniors.
The Rainbow senior class did all they could to go out with a win as all six runs were either driven in by or scored by a senior. Derek Honma led the 'Bows with a 2-for-4 performance with a double, a triple, two RBI and one run scored. Gregg Omori went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs scored.
The two starting pitchers shut down the offenses for three innings, giving up a combined one hit going into the fourth inning. But Louisiana Tech exploded in the fourth, getting five runs on five hits, to take the big lead. The 'Bows responded when Honma tripled in two runs to cut the lead to 5-2.
Lane Nogawa then drove in a run in the fifth inning to chip the lead down to two before the Bulldogs added two runs in the eighth to get the difference back up to 7-3.
Not ready to give in, the Rainbow seniors went back to work in the bottom of the inning. Gregg Omori hit his second home run of the season before Scooter Martines and Derek Honma both scored runs to cut the lead down to 7-6. But Louisiana Tech added an insurance run before the 'Bows failed to muster another rally, falling 8-6.
Hawai`i now heads on the road again to close out the year with two WAC series. The 'Bows will first face Nevada in Reno May 18-20 before playing the Fresno State Bulldogs on May 24-26 to close out the year.
