HOUSTON -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (14-25, 3-10 WAC) fell to the Rice Owls (33-8, 15-1) 9-1 in front of 2,312 fans at Reckling Park Friday. Phillip Humber (8-1) gave up just three hits in eight innings for the win, while
Sean Yamashita (2-5) got the loss.
The Owls jumped out to a two-run lead in the bottom of the third inning when Dane Bubela hit a two-out single that scored to runs. Rice added another run in the fourth on a two-out double by Eric Arnold.
The Owls again scored another run with two outs, in the bottom of the sixth on an Austin Davis single. A Vincent Sinisi home run in the seventh inning opened the flood gates, as Rice ended up scoring nine total runs.
Kevin Gilbride hit a RBI double in the top of the ninth but that was all that Hawai`i could get, falling 9-1.
The two teams will close out their three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. CDT. Freshman Ricky Bauer will take the mound for UH with Justin Crowder going out for the Owls.
