Rainbows Beat Vulcans 7-2 in Easter Tourney

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (11-20, 3-2 Easter Tournament) defeated the UH-Hilo Vulcans (9-29-1, 1-4 Easter Tournament) 7-2 in the sixth day of the Ohana Hotels & Resorts Easter Tournament at the Les Murakami Stadium. Saturday's ticketed attendance was 2,740 as Sean Yamashita (2-2) got his second straight victory while Daniel Lockett got the loss.

Yamashita earned the team's first complete game of the year, going nine innings, giving up just five hits and two runs. The senior also struck out eight while walking just two.

The 'Bows jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the third inning off a Lane Nogawa two-run home run. It was Nogawa's first career homer.

UH-Hilo then responded with a run to cut the lead to one. But then the 'Bows got three in the fourth and two more in the sixth to extend their lead.

Derek Honma led the Rainbow bats going 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Gregg Omori, Arthur Guillen and Kevin Gilbride also turned in two-hit performances in the game.

In earlier action, San Jose State finished tournament play with a perfect 6-0 record after beating Lewis-Clark State 4-3 in 11 innings. In the second game, Birmingham-Southern defeated UC Riverside 6-3.

Tomorrow will be the final day of the tournament with UC Riverside and Hawai`i Pacific squaring off in the morning game. Birmingham-Southern and UH-Hilo will play in the second game with the Rainbows meeting Lewis-Clark State in the nightcap.
