COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team concluded its season-opening tournament on Tuesday, battling through a rough final day to finish tied for 13
th place at the CDA National Reserve Invitational.
The Rainbow Warriors posted a final-round 305 (+17) to finish the 54-hole event with an 896 (+32) team total, sharing 13
th place with Fresno State. St. Mary's (Calif.) captured the team title at 7-under 857, narrowly edging out Pacific by a single stroke.
Junior
Josh Hayashida provided a bright spot in Tuesday's final round. In his first tournament back after missing last season due to injury, the Mililani, O'ahu native fired a team-best 1-under 71 to finish tied for 41
st overall at 223 (+7). His strong closing effort was fueled by a blistering stretch in the middle of his round, where he rolled in four birdies over a six-hole span.
Competing as an individual, freshman
Troy Gadalla capped off an impressive collegiate debut by shooting a final-round 74 (+2) to tie for 34
th place at 6-over 222. Fellow newcomer
Campbell Kerr finished as the top scorer within the team lineup, posting a 78 (+6) on Tuesday to secure a tie for 24
th place at 4-over 220.
Senior
Dane Watanabe carded a 77 (+5) to finish tied for 56
th at 9-over 225, while
Alec Hilgers (T-80th, 232) and freshman
Stryker Leick (T-94th, 239) rounded out the Hawai'i contingent.
The Rainbow Warriors will look to bounce back next month when they travel to Midland, Texas, for the Tall City Collegiate, running Oct. 12-13. The two-day tournament will be hosted by Wyoming.
