Women's Basketball Takes Win Streak to CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team takes a four-game winning streak into the second game of this week's Big West road trip, a matchup with CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Pacific Time (noon Hawai'i time).
 
The Rainbow Wahine opened the trip with a 75-47 rout of CSUN on Thursday in Northridge, Calif., picking up their fourth straight victory and improving to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Roadrunners (1-15, 1-5) are also coming off a win over CSUN. They posted the first victory under head coach Ari Wideman with a 62-56 win over the Matadors on Jan. 11.

  • The Rainbow Wahine enter Saturday's game first in the Big West and 14st nationally in scoring defense at 54.7 points allowed per game.
  • UH ranks second in the conference and 10th in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (34.3%).
  • UH has held 12 opponents under 40% shooting — including five games under 30% — and is 10-2 in those contests.
  • The 'Bows remain atop the Big West and rank 11th nationally in blocks per game (5.6).

STACKING WINS
  • UH's current four-game winning streak is its second longest of the season. The Rainbow Wahine won five straight from Nov. 9 (at Portland State) to Nov. 30 (vs. UT Martin).
  • The Rainbow Wahine have held their last four opponents to 50 points or fewer, allowing an average of 47 points per game on 31% shooting during their winning streak.
  • UH has also controlled the boards over the last four games with 41.5 rebounds per game and a plus-12.3 rebounding margin over that span. The 'Bows are 8-0 when outrebounding their opponents this season.
  • The 'Bows are shooting 40% from the field and 81% from the free-throw line over the last four games while averaging 63 points per game and posting a 16-point average scoring margin.
  • The 'Bows posted their highest point totals in a quarter (26), half (45) and game (75) in Thursday's win at CSUN.
  • UH improved to 3-3 in true road games with wins at Cal Poly and CSUN in their last two contests in California. The 'Bows are 3-4 away from Manoa overall.

'BOWS NOTES
  • Imani Perez has led UH in scoring in each of the last two games, scoring 14 against Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 11 and a season-high 19 on Thursday at CSUN. The junior shot a combined 56.5% from the field in those games.
  • Lily Wahinekapu continues to lead the team with 10.8 points per game and 48 assists. The senior is averaging 13.5 points and 3.5 assists per game in Big West play.
  • Brooklyn Rewers has provided a boost off the bench by scoring in double figures in six of the last eight games and averaging 8.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in Big West games.
  • MeiLani McBee has 187 3-pointers in her career and is 18 away from the program's record held by Amy Atwell. The senior has played in 124 games in her career, two away from Atwell's UH record.
  • UH head coach Laura Beeman earned the 600th win of her career on Thursday at CSUN. She posted 390 wins at Mt. San Antonio College (1994-2010) and has 210 wins over her 13 seasons leading the Rainbow Wahine.

 
THE MATCHUP

  • The Rainbow Wahine and Roadrunners meet for the 18th time in a series that began on Nov. 21, 2009, a 105-75 CSUB win. The game remains the last time a UH opponent scored 100-plus points.
  • UH has won the last nine meetings with CSUB, starting with an 81-67 win on March 10, 2021 in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championship in Las Vegas.
  • CSUB last defeated UH on Jan. 16, 2021, 51-43 in Bakersfield.
  • UH is 4-5 against CSUB in Bakersfield and earned an 85-48 win at the Icardo Center in last year's regular-season finale. The win gave the 'Bows the Big West regular-season title outright and marked Laura Beeman's 200th win at UH.
  • Ari Wideman is in her first season as the Roadrunners' head coach. She's the fourth head coach in program history and was previously an assistant coach at Toledo. Wideman played at Nevada from 2010 to '14 and competed against UH when both schools were members of the Western Athletic Conference.
  • The Roadrunners picked up their first win of the season with a 62-56 victory at CSUN on Jan. 11.
  • Senior forward Ary Dizon leads the Big West and ranks 14th in the NCAA Division I with 2.38 blocks per game. Her 38 total blocks ranks 16th nationally. Dizon also leads the team with 5.6 rebounds per game.
  • Freshman guard Caitie Gingras scored a season-high 15 points against CSUN and leads CSUB with 8.1 points per game. Dizon follows with 7.7 ppg.
  • CSUB assistant coach Fa-Ko-Fiame'a Hafoka-Latu is a 2016 graduate of Lahainaluna High School on Maui.
