Throwers Lead Day One of Big West Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. – The Hawai'i women's track and field team sits in fifth place with 31 points after Friday's opening day of the Big West Championships following a strong day by its throwers, highlighted by Hallee Mohr's record-breaking conference title performance in the discus.
 
Mohr delivered the Rainbow Wahine's first individual conference title of the meet with a dominant performance in the discus. The senior won the event by nearly 10m and set a school record with a toss of 58.25m (191-1) on her final attempt. Mohr's record-breaking throw capped off an incredible series that included throws of 53.10m, 56.27m, 46.87m, 53.23m and 56.42m.
 
Mohr also moved into 16th in the country in the discus with her performance and currently sits in the No. 10 spot in the west region. Samaria Vital joined Mohr in the finals and placed fifth with a mark of 45.61m (149-7) to make it a 14-point event for the 'Bows in the discus.
 
The UH throwers also put up the first points of the weekend in the opening event Friday with nine points in the javelin. Jessica Mackenzie took bronze with a toss of 43.55m (142-10) on her sixth and final attempt while Rose Forshaw added three points with a sixth-place finish and a mark of 41.23m (135-3).
 
The Rainbow Wahine sprinters turned in a big day of prelims with seven opportunities to put up points in tomorrow's finals. Amy Warrington and Isabella Kneeshaw both won their heats in the 400m prelims with Kneeshaw running a 54.68 and Warrington improving her No. 7 all-time program time with a 55.55.
 
Alyssa Mae Antolin will defend her 200m Big West crown after coasting to a victory in her heat with a 23.97 while running the fifth-fastest qualifying time in the 100m dash with an 11.70. Kneeshaw and Warrington will join Antolin in the 200m final after Kneeshaw ran the sixth-fastest time in school history with a 24.23 and Warrington posted the sixth-best qualifying time with a 24.51. Sammie Gordon rounds out the group of finals qualifiers in short-track events after posting a 1:01.89 in the 400m hurdles.
 
Emilie Kirk Langschwager will give UH a scoring chance in the 1500m run after crossing the line in 4:36.63 to finish third in her heat and post the sixth-fastest qualifying time. Zola O'Donnell closed out the action on day one by running the eighth-fastest 10,000m in school history with a time of 37:49.31 to improve her PR by nearly a full minute.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will get the second and final day of the Big West Championships underway Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. HT.
