FULLERTON, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i track and field team turned in a complete performance to finish off the Ben Brown Invitational on Saturday, as multiple athletes qualified for the Big West Championships in May during the first meet of the season at the Titan Track Complex.
 
"In my years in coaching, this has been the best start to an outdoor season I've been a part of," said head track and field coach Madeleine Carleton. "The conditions were rough the last two days, but it didn't slow us down or change what we set out to do. I'm thrilled with how we performed."
 
Sophomore Lilian Turban took first place in the high jump with a height of 1.76m (5'9 ¼'), punching her ticket to the Big West. Joining her atop the podium was freshman Tara Wylie, who claimed first place in the triple jump at 12.30m (40' 4 ¼) for a personal best in the event.
 
Coming off a big first day, sophomore Caitlin Simmons repeated her success on the second day as she qualified for the Big West in both the triple jump and the 100m hurdles. Simmons placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 12.06m (39' 6 ¾) and placed ninth in the 100m hurdles at 14.60.
 
Junior Tierra Sydnor recorded a solid performance in the 400m hurdles, placing at No. 5 with a time of 1:02.98, qualifying her for the Big West Championships. Also, putting up Big West qualifier numbers were junior Hallee Mohr and graduate Victoria Solheim in the shot put. The tandem finished at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Mohr launched at 13.17m (43' 2 ½), and Solheim at 12.96 (42' 6 ¼).
 
The 400 relay team finished in third and will look to improve throughout the season, building off their time of 47.12 as juniors Gianna Scruggs, Alyssa Mae Antolin, and Amy Warrington teamed up with senior Kū'ulei Moku combined for the effort.
 
Originally the 'Bows were planning to travel for another meet next week in Sacramento, but it was canceled due to repairs at the hosting facility. Currently, UH isn't scheduled to compete again till the end of the month in San Francisco, Calif., but the schedule is subject to change with the addition of another meet.
