NEWS & NOTES
- The Rainbow Wahine finished as the only team to go winless in the Bank of Hawai'i Classic a week ago, falling to Florida Gulf Coast 65-45 and Lipscomb 73-69 in overtime.
- Sophomore guard Lily Wahinekapu was a bright spot in the Classic as she was named to the tournament team after scoring a combined 27 points over two games.
- Graduate center Kallin Spiller has been a force on the boards, stringing together three consecutive games of 10 or more rebounds. A season ago, she only tallied three games of double-digit rebounds in 25 games of action.
- Florida Gulf Coast, the No. 1 ranked team in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll, is coming into the Rainbow Wahine Showdown on an extended stay. A week ago, they participated in the Bank of Hawai'i Classic, going 2-0 to claim the tournament championship. The Eagles are currently in the midst of an 11-day stay on O'ahu.
- Stanford, the No. 2 team in the country, enters at 5-1 following a loss to No. 1 South Carolina over the weekend. The clash of titans pitted the NCAA champions over the last two seasons, and the Cardinal held a 10-point leading into the fourth quarter. Still, the Gamecocks forced overtime, leading to an eventual 76-71 victory.
- UH and Stanford currently share three common opponents, two Big West foes in CSUN and Cal Poly, along with Portland. All three games favor the Cardinal and have been decided by 37 points or more.
NOT THE IDEAL RECORD
Winning is a part of the tradition at UH, with a 736-569 record heading into the Rainbow Wahine Showdown, but slow starts happen. The 'Bows started the 2021-22 season at 0-3 and later 2-5, pulled into a 20-win season at 20-10. In the first four games this season, UH is 0-4, a first since the 2018-19 campaign, finishing with a record of 15-17. The longest stretch to start a season with a win was in 2008-2009 under head coach Jim Bolla with an 0-6 mark out of the gate, leading to an 8-23 overall record.
ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL
One of the key factors to the 0-4 start has been the 'Bows inability to get in a rhythm offensively. All four losses have seen the green and white shoot under 40% from the floor and score less than 70 points. Both seem to be the markers for success when looking at the 2021-22 season. When UH shot 40% or higher, the record stood at 13-2. When scoring 70 or more, their record was an eye-popping 11-1.
FLIK, HOPPER, DOT, & SLIM
Nothing is more annoying than a pesky bug that won't leave you alone. Regarding pests, two big ones are the records against two of the three teams in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown. In 13 combined meetings against Florida Gulf Coast and Stanford, UH is 0-13. The Cardinal have a 10-0 record, while the Eagles have a 3-0 record. Of the 13 losses, only three have been decided by single digits, two games against Stanford in the late 80s and one against FGCU in 2018. At the same time, crazy things tend to happen in the Showdown; ask Texas from 2019 when the upstart 'Bows knocked off the national power on the last day of the tournament.
