Men’s Golf To Make Annual Trek To Western Intercollegiate

In what has become an annual tradition for the University of Hawai'i men's golf team, the Rainbow Warriors will participate in the 74th Western Intercollegiate Presented by Topgolf, Monday, April 12 through Wednesday, April 14 at the famed Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.
 
The Golf Channel will once again provide three hours of live coverage per day of the tournament, airing 4:00-7:00 p.m. PT (1:00-4:00 p.m. HT) on Monday and Tuesday and 1:00-4:00 p.m. PT (10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. HT) on Wednesday.
 
UH is making its 11th consecutive appearance at the Western and 19th since 2000. Last year's event was canceled due to the pandemic. Each year, the Western is considered one of the nation's top collegiate golf tournaments and this year is no different with 10 of the 15 participating teams ranked in the Top 100 nationally. 
 
The highest ranked teams in this year's field are No. 14 Arizona, No. 17 Pepperdine, and No. 28 San Diego State. Also competing are Brigham Young (#90), California (#100), Colorado State (#87), Oregon (#57), San Jose State (#112), Stanford (#36), UC Irvine (#183), UCLA (#92), USC (#59), UTEP (#173), and Washington (#46).
 
Participants will play a total of 54 holes, 18 on each day, at the par-70, 6,615 yard course with tee times beginning at 8:54 a.m. PT on Monday and Tuesday and 8:00 a.m. PT on Wednesday. The format is play-six, score-five.
 
In its 74th year, the Western is the longest running college golf tournament west of the Mississippi. UH's contingent this year includes Kotaro MurataJustin ArcanoJustin Ngan, Kanata IreiCole Yoshida, and Ratio Visuttipinate.
 
Among this year's contingent who have competed at the Western, seniors Arcano and Yoshida both participated twice while senior Ngan played once. In 2019, Ngan tied for 58th, which included a final round 69. Arcano tied for 67th and Yoshida placed 78th.  In 2018, Arcano tied for 70th and Yoshida finished 94th.
 
Murata, a sophomore from Matsuyama, Japan, leads the team with a 73.6 scoring average and was the team's top finisher in all three tournaments this season. Visuttipinate, a freshman from Thailand, will be making his second appearance of the season.
 
Pasatiempo is an award-winning course known for its masterful Alister MacKenzie design. The Western features a rich history with a former champion lists that includes Johnny Miller, Peter Jacobsen, Mark O'Meara, Duffy Waldorf, Bobby Clampett, Patrick Rodgers, Mark Lyle, and Ken Venturi.
 
The Western Intercollegiate is the final tune-up for the Rainbow Warriors for the Big West Conference Championships, which will be held May 2-4 at the La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, Calif.,
