’Bows Excel in Relays on Saturday in California

The University of Hawaiʻi women's track and field team concluded action at both the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in California on Saturday. The weekend action marked the first time the Rainbow Wahine had split their squad at two locations this season.

"I'm really proud of how everyone competed at both meets," head coach Tim Boyce said. "We had a lot of positives, and it was a great trip for the 'Bows."

The Rainbow Wahine shined in both the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay at the Stanford Invitational, turning in the program's fastest times in the events since the mid 1980s.

In the 4x100m relay, UH's team of Martina Latting, Raion Black, Natasha Currence and Calli-Ann Abbott put together a time of 46.79 for sixth place in the competitive field. It is the third-best time in school history and marked the first time UH has broken 47 seconds in the event since 1985.

Currence, Latting and Black teamed with Kristen LaCosse for a 4x400m relay time of 3:49.34. Also the third-best time in program history, it is the fastest relay for the 'Bows since a 3:39.10 in 1984.

Also at the Stanford Invitational, Alexis Brenzil won the javelin with a distance of 47.39m (155'6") on her first throw of the day. The mark is one of the best in her collegiate career.

Black and Latting performed well in the 200m with times of 24.56 and 25.50, respectively.

In Mike Fanelli Track Classic action, Haley Beaumont etched her name into the UH record book by clocking in at 5:11.25 in the mile, which is the eighth-best time in program history.

Hope Stewart turned in the sixth-fastest two mile time in program history in 11:52.51 to secure sixth place on Saturday. For the freshman, it was the first time running the event in her collegiate career.

In the 800m, Jessica Cushing-murray won her heat with a personal record time of 2:17.71. The time is nearly three seconds faster than her 2:20.65 performance at the Rainbow Relays last week.

Also in the 800m, Alison Bowman finished with a career-best time of 2:22.12 to take second in her heat.

The next time the Rainbow Wahine will compete is April 12-13 at the UCSD Triton Invitational.
