UH Track and Field to Host Sunrise Meet #1 on Saturday

HONOLULU - In the first action of the 2019 season, the University of Hawaiʻi women's track and field team will host the Sunrise Meet #1 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex on campus on Saturday, Jan. 12. Events will begin at 8 a.m. and will include entries of athletes of various ages.

"We're looking forward to our first opportunity to compete in the new year," Head Coach Tim Boyce said. "This event will give our ladies the chance to show their fitness and earn a spot to the first travel meet in Seattle, Wash. two weeks later. We're anticipating great efforts, and we're looking forward to starting the year on a positive note."

On the track, Saturday's competition includes the 60m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 60m hurdles and 300m hurdles as well as the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Among the field events will be the pole vault, hammer throw, high jump, weight throw, shot put, long jump, discus, javelin and triple jump.

Boyce, now in his second season as the head coach of the Rainbow Wahine, has reason for optimism with this year's squad with a number of strong returners and newcomers.

The most decorated returner is Alexis Brenzil, a two-time NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifier in the javelin. Boyce also brings back Megan Fereira, the top returning pole vaulter, Raion Black in the sprints, and Calli-Ann Abbott and Kristen LaCosse in the hurdles.

A trio of 800m runners in Teuila Gardner, Danielle Girard and Tristan Setzer are returning with another year of experience. Some notable additions on the track are Martina Latting (transfer from Xavier [La.]) in the sprints and Jessica Cushing-murray (transfer from UCLA) in the middle distance and distance events.

Following Saturday's action, the 'Bows will turn their attention to the first indoor meet of the season - the UW Invitational set for Jan. 25-26 in Seattle.
