One of the biggest question marks of University of Hawai'i fall camp is who will take the reins of the quarterback position in the Rainbow Warriors' new run and shoot offense in 2018. The battle will likely come down to a game week decision as UH opens the schedule with a road game at Colorado State, Aug. 25.
Two-year starter
Dru Brown left the program following the season and only returnee with game experience is sophomore
Cole McDonald, who appeared in six contests as a redshirt freshman in 2018. The La Mirada, Calif., native completed 5-of-9 passes for 22 yards and one touchdown and can also make plays with his feet, finishing as the team's third-leading rusher with 138 yards and another score. As a high school senior at Sonora High in California, McDonald threw for 2,313 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushed for 1,091 yards and 10 scores.
A pair of freshmen –
Chevan Cordeiro and
Jeremy Moussa – along with transfer
Kolney Cassel are also vying for the spot.
During his senior season at Honolulu's Saint Louis School, Cordeiro thrived in the run and shoot offense, throwing for 3,130 yards and 29 touchdowns while completing 67 percent of his passes. He was state's Gatorade Player of the Year and capped a state championship season with 440 yards and three touchdowns in the title game against Kahuku High.
Moussa, a 2017 graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt School in Eastvale, Calif., was an early enrollee at Mānoa and participated in spring ball gaining valuable experience with the run and shoot. Known for his strong arm, he was a two-year starter at Roosevelt High, and threw for more than 7,000 yards and 90 touchdowns while breaking almost every passing record in school history.
Cassell has experience in the run and shoot, having spent two seasons at SMU under former UH head coach June Jones. The Yakima, Wash., native appeared in five games for the Mustangs before transferring to Sacramento State, where he saw his most action in 2015, throwing for 521 yards and three touchdowns.
Freshman
Justin Uahinui redshirted in 2017 while senior
Larry Tuileta has yet to join the team while competing with the U.S. Senior National volleyball team this summer. Tuileta twice earned All-America honors with the UH men's volleyball squad as a libero and is wrapping up his collegiate career with one season left of football.
