Another University of Hawai'i position group looking to reload is the offensive line, which lost four starters from a season ago, including four-time all-Mountain West lineman
Dejon Allen, now competing with the Chicago Bears.
The lone returning starter is a big one in junior
J.R. Hensley, who stands 6-foot-5, 310 pounds. The Edmond, Okla., native started six games at guard last season as part of a line that produced the team's best rushing average (168.2 ypg) in more than two decades.
To replace last year's starters – with a combined 124 career starts – will be a daunting task. But new offensive line coach
Mark Weber, a veteran in his own right with 36 years of coaching experience, has a solid group of returnees and newcomers. Among them is junior
Emil Graves (6-3, 275), who redshirted in 2017, and will be competing for a starting spot. The Lynwood, Calif., native played two seasons at Fullerton College and is capable of playing all three positions on the line.
Returning lettermen
Taaga Tuulima (6-2, 290),
Alesana Sunia (6-3, 320), and
Stephan Bernal-Wendt (6-4, 310) all saw action last season in spot duty, but are ready to make a jump in the rotation and earn a more prominent role. Tuulima started one game at center as a redshirt freshman. Sophomore
Joey Nu'uanu-Kuhi'iki (6-3, 280) made the switch from defensive line, where he briefly saw action in two games last season while senior
Kaiwi Chung (6-0, 285) moves to the line after spending two years at fullback.
Redshirt freshman
Micah Vanterpool (6-6, 315) took full advantage of his redshirt season gaining 30-pounds of muscle. He finished his high school career not giving up a single sack, while being named a first-team 6A and Arizona Football Coaches Association Top 25 player. Hometown products
Ramsey Aviu (6-2, 300) of 'Aiea High and
Ra Elkington (6-5, 350) of Kahuku High both redshirted last season.
Eight junior college transfers and freshman add bulk and depth to the unit. Among the biggest is junior
Kohl Levao, a 6-foot-6, 340-pound transfer from City College of San Francisco, who made 13 starts in two seasons. His teammate on the line at CCSF, junior
Ernest Moore, is no slouch either. Listed at 6-foot-8, 305-pounds, Moore is the tallest Rainbow Warrior on the roster.
Also coming to UH via the junior college route are
Alex Dalpe (6-4, 290), who played one season at Long Beach City College and
Gene Pryor (6-3, 305), who played two seasons at College of the Sequoias.
Freshman
Solo Vaipulu (6-2, 310) and
Ilm Manning (6-4, 250) will push for playing time. Vaipulu is a 2018 graduate of Corona Centennial High school in Corona, Calif., where he rated as the No. 9 offensive guard in the West by 247sports. Manning played both sides of the ball and was a skilled track athlete at Apollo High School in Arizona.
Kamuela Borden (6-4, 250), whose brother is three-year long snapper
Noah Borden, returns after a two-year church mission while
Elias Wong (6-2, 295) is a graduate of Kailua High School.
