Baseball Travels to UC Davis for Three-Game Big West Series

DAVIS, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team (16-10, 2-1 BWC) will cap its seven-game California road swing this weekend at the Dobbins Baseball Complex, taking on its second Big West series at UC Davis (8-15, 1-2 BWC). With a change for weather, the three-game set with the Aggies is scheduled for Friday-Sunday (April 5-8).

*WEATHER UPDATE*
Originally scheduled to begin Friday afternoon in Davis, the opening game of the three-game University of Hawai'i baseball series at UC Davis has been rescheduled to Thursday (April 5) at 2:30 p.m. (11:30 a.m. HT) at Dobbins Baseball Complex. Heavy rains are projected to sweep through the area on Friday into early Saturday and may affect the playing dates and times for the entire series. The other two games in the series will be played as possible based on weather. Game two of the series is scheduled to start on Friday, weather permitting, but may be moved to Saturday depending on projected conditions. Further schedule updates will be announced with changes to the weather situation in the area.

The Rainbow Warriors fell on Monday night in a rare one-off at Pacific, but are coming off a conference-opening weekend series win at UC Irvine. The 'Bows earned their first all-time victory in Irvine on Thursday and came out with a 2-1 series win on a 14-2 Saturday trouncing of the Anteaters.

Ranking 10th in the NCAA with 13 doubles on the year, sophomore Adam Fogel has taken over for the Rainbow Warriors on offense, batting a team-high .347 with a .592 slugging percentage. Exactly half of the 'Bows right fielder's team-high 34 hits have produced extra bases, including three home runs. For his efforts, he's collected team highs of 18 RBI and 17 runs.

The 14th-toughest player to strike out in the nation, shortstop Maaki Yamazaki is also hitting .298 for UH, scoring 15 runs with 10 RBI, reaching base at a .362 clip as the leadoff batter. In addition, senior Johnny Weeks is one away from tying for second in UH career sac bunts, committing to the team move with nine on the year, ranking fifth in the nation.

The 'Bows pitching staff has been a cornerstone this season and remains among the top tier of the NCAA, leading the Big West and ranking 40th with a 3.38 team ERA, paced by Cade Smith at 2.28. A right-handed freshman, Smith has struck out 20 in just 23.2 innings after moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation. The weekend staff should see right-handed redshirt junior Jackson Rees (2-0, 2.55 ERA), who leads the team with 29 strikeouts in 35.2 innings. Wrapping up the weekend, right-handed senior Neil Uskali ties for the lead in Big West victories with a 5-1 record, a 3.29 ERA and 27 strikeouts in a team-leading 41 innings. On the back end, redshirt sophomore closer Dylan Thomas leads the conference and ranks 13th nationally with seven saves in 10 opportunities.

The Aggies are coming off a midweek victory over San Jose State on Tuesday (W, 7-3) after falling in a 2-1 Big West series loss at UC Riverside last weekend. With the Big West's top batting average (24th NCAA), left fielder/DH Ryan Anderson has logged a team-high 21 runs and 19 RBI, reaching base with a .447 OBP thanks to 38 hits, including nine extra base hits. Third baseman Brad Pluschkell is still steady for the Aggies, batting .351 with 10 doubles and 19 runs. On average, the Aggies put up 10.4 hits and 5.7 runs per game.

Right-handed starters Jared Sasaki and Matt Blais, as well as lefty Chris Brown, dominate the innings for the Aggies. Coming in with a 4.71 ERA in 28.2 innings, Sasaki has a 2-2 record and 14 strikeouts. Brown has a 5.76 ERA and 1-3 record in 29.2 innings, striking out 20 with 14 walks. At 6.56, Blais has a team high 35.2 innings and a 2-3 record, striking out a team-leading 24. UCD comes in with a 5.79 team ERA, allowing an average of 11 hits and 6.6 runs.

The Rainbow Warriors hold a 14-8 advantage in the all-time series, only dating back to 2005. The Aggies took the series 2-1 last year in Honolulu with the losses decided by a total of three runs. However, UH won six of the last seven before that, including a three-game sweep in the last trip to Davis. Overall, Hawai'i leads UCD 4-3 on the road.

After facing the Aggies, the Rainbow Warriors will return to Honolulu for a three-game Big West series against UC Riverside at Les Murakami Stadium, April 13-15.
